Even without the confines and standards that society has set, we as humans, as mammals, as animals, have it engrained in us to improve our species through the next generation. So, in that, when we're considering mates, to find people we are physically attracted to, to improve the species. So having looks as a priority for people we fraternize/mate with isn't shallow, but something we can't help but do. Which is part of why I find it so funny when people say that personality is the highest thing on their list of qualities they want in the prefferred sex.
