Gothic Fashion: Industrial/ Cybergoth

You walk into the dark club and the place is packed. Taking a few minutes for your eyes to adjust you see a flash of color. You work your way through the crowd to see them- Cybergoth. Not hard to find as this fashion style is all about color. Or is it? Cybergoth/ Rivethead and Industrial are a fashion style that is as multifaceted as you can get but I am going to try and touch on a few of the common aspects of this style for you.

First- we can not talk of this fashion without talking of the music as it plays a big part of the scene. Industrial Music is a given, but also electronic, future pop, and noise is the sounds of this fashion. The music sets the tone of the clothing you see.

Industrial is more black combat boots , camo clothing, tank tops, gas masks, goggles, flight jackets and trench coats. Hair styles are buzzed, bowl-cut or shaved. Think of the clothing of movies like Blade Runner, Firefly and Tank Girl.

Cybergoth/Rivethead takes this look a step into the Sci-Fi, if not the cybernetics of the future. Use of PVC tubing and pipes, breathing respirator, ear mikes, rubber, vinyl and metal, color hair extensions, even old computer parts are used to make this futuristic fashion come to life. We are not talking a Star Trek clean sharp uniform either. Movies such as the Matrix, Ghost in the Shell and the Borg are more of an example of this style.

Then we have the color. Forget the glow sticks of the past. They are being replaced with LED lights, UV reactive neon color on the clothing and UV body paint. Hair styles have even more color added with colored yarn woven into or flexible tubing added by extensions. Platform shoes and boots is the footwear of choice but some shops even sell furry or vinyl leg covers in all kinds of colors and styles. Trust me- these are not the leg warmers of the past but most definitely of the future.

While the online shops listed are a great place to start these fashion styles have an advantage for those on a budget. Look at the fashion, learn the style, pull what parts you like and go shopping. Hardware, computer stores, industrial shops, craft shops and army surpluses are wonderful places to find those extra touches. Make what you can and save up for the pieces you have to buy.

Pretty much anything goes when you talk of the future. As always with any style please make it your own. Never let anyone tell you what is right or wrong- wear what expresses you. I think that is the draw of this fashion style… nothing to compare it too. You are making the fashion of the future.
