I put a few new shells in the crab tank yesterday. I have several little guys about the same size, and I think they might moult soon, so I put some new shell "homes" in there for them to test drive.
One found the new shells right away. He didn't even bother to wait till darkness when they usually change shells. Enthusiastically he straddled the new shell, slipped out of his old one and into the new one. Then he toddled around a bit to see how he liked it. Nope, not to his liking, so it was back to the original shell. He found the other two, and tried those on also. One he kept a bit longer than the others but he ended up back in his original shell.
Two other little crabs watched all this. They waited till the first guy was all done and toddling off to the food dish before they took their turns. And damn if one of them didn't "adopt" one of the new shells..a soft gray one with a mother of pearl interior.
So fun to watch them do stuff like that!
Bela, one of my littler crabs, had been spending a lot of time in one corner lately. The other crabs would come along and try to push him out, but he stubbornly kept to his spot. Now I see why! He had dug in and had a moult today. He's all snuggled down next to his old exoskeleton, which he might use for food in the next few days. Aww...my little guy is growing!
