The name means ‘traitor’ or ‘oath breaker’ in old English and old Scottish. Since Witches had sided with the Devil they had broken their oath with God and so the word Warlock was applied to them. This term was first used in 7th century when monks wrote about paganism. Those that did not practice Christianity but followed old religions of the land were evil and dangerous. There is a story which may explain the origin of the word Warlock. At one time there was a Scot who went against the wishes of his clan to become a Catholic priest. Banished by the clan he was labelled a ‘warlock’ which was Gaelic for traitor. They never called him by his real name. Later the man was eventually caught and was one of 50 people who were burnt to death as punishment for being witches. - See more at: http://www.mythicalcreatureslist.com/mythical-creature/Warlock#sthash.OwRccGuD.dpuf

Another explanation of the word Warlock can be trailed back to the Old Norse word ‘varth-lokkr’ meaning ‘one who locks’. It was believed that there were people in this world who would perform exorcisms and would trap unwanted spirits. - See more at: http://www.mythicalcreatureslist.com/mythical-creature/Warlock#sthash.OwRccGuD.dpuf

It should also be noted that any references to the Devil regarding witches, warlocks, wizards, sorcery, etc. is erroneous the Devil is a creation of the medieval Christian religion. It does not apply to witchcraft unless "erroneously" in order to apply Christian beliefs onto other religions which themselves do not hold those beliefs. - See more at: http://www.mythicalcreatureslist.com/mythical-creature/Warlock#sthash.OwRccGuD.dpuf
