When Christianity became widespread and popular over Europe the old believers in pagan magic were demonized and criticized as being evil. Medieval Christianity taught that a Witch was a woman who practiced magic or sorcery especially Black Magic. Witches were believed to be on the side of the Devil and would thus do hi bidding. It was also taught that Witches created magic spells and potions with help from a demonic pet known as a Familiar. In Africa Witches are helped by their pet monkey and in Japan they are helped by their pet owl. The idea of Witches became very popular during the Middle Ages. Thousands of people were tortured and put to death on claims of being a Witch. The idea travelled to North America by the English. A Witch Hunt took place in 1692 in which 19 people were executed. The belief in Witches and Witchcraft exist even to this day. However the real Witch is a person who practices either White or Black magic. White Magic includes enchanted spells that benefit others. Black Magic is used to benefit oneself at the expense of harming others. Ved'Ma is the name for a Witch in Russian. The direct translation means 'to know' as Witches were said to be very knowledgeable of natural phenomena as well as proficient at casting spells.
Brujo is the Spanish word for a male Witch from Argentina. The Bruja (females) are higher in number but both practice the Black Art to cause misfortune, illness and even death to their victims. They are seen as the manifestation of evil. If someone falls ill and is incurable it is believed that they were infected by the spells of a Brujo or Bruja.
