When Psych isn't spoofing The Hangover, the psychic detective Shawn (James Roday) and partner Gus (Dule Hill) are having fun with a vampire case -- when they're not being spooked that is -- on "This Episode Sucks." Like The Hangover spoof too, Shawn is actually helping Lassie (Timothy Omundson) out, a strange but great new dynamic for the USA Network comedy.
Lassie and Shawn have notoriously not gotten along, ever. But when Lassie thought he murdered someone in "Last Night Gus," Shawn stood by him -- kind of -- and solved the case. In "This Episode Sucks," Shawn is confused by the fact that Lassie agrees that a vampire killed their victim. But he rolls with it.
Little does Shawn know, at first, that Lassie is just trying to protect a girl he met at the bar, a girl named Marlowe (Kristy Swanson) who he's suddenly madly in love with. As Lassie says, meeting her was similar to the rush Lassie felt when he met Chuck Norris at an NRA meeting. Plus, she's pretty and the only girl on Psych to show an interest in Lassie.
But Marlowe has a secret. Her brother is sick and needs O negative blood. She helped him break into the blood bank, but she didn't help him kill anyone. Marlowe even tries to protect Lassie, because her brother Adrian is after Lassie next. Luckily, Lassie has built up a tolerance to chloroform.
While the case -- and Lassie's somewhat newfound friendship with Shawn -- was interesting, it was the Psych vampire jokes and gags that really made this episode. For one, Corey Feldman of Lost Boys fame showed up as a bartender in a vampire bar and made fun of the patrons, calling them fashionistas and slam poets. Then of course there was Shawn and Gus, who dressed as vampires, and Gus had to fight the assumption that he was Count Chocula. He was Blacula instead. In the interrogation room, with one of Marlowe's roommates, they toss in a bulb of garlic, then resort to spraying their suspect with holy water. None of it works. "You guys are actually devolving," Juliet (Maggie Lawson) appropriately says.
But the best moment of the night? When Shawn plays with a bag of blood and it accidentally spills in Gus's direction. Gus becomes totally unresponsive, despite Henry (Corbin Bernsen) trying to revive him by poking his face. When Shawn tries? He gets a punch to the face.
