Growing Pains

September 1st my daughter turned 13 years old. It was a day she had long awaited, I finally allowed her an online email and an account on a site frequented by her friends...the dreaded facebook.

While she was at school I set up her accounts and sent friend invites to family members who have not seen or talked with her in years. Upon her arrival home I helped her in completing her profile information and after cautioning her about only adding people she actually knows I further assisted her in her search for friends from school.

Here the plot thickens...She sent a friend request to a boy who spends as much free time at our home as possible. He is defeated1's best friend. Naturally since he spends so much time in our home both kids are friends with him. My daughter has crushed on this boy since the sixth grade, she is now in the 8th and she always tags after them like a little mascot.

This young man accepted her friend request and began speaking to her in the private chatbox. At some point during the conversation she typed in a little heart. This boy reacted with great enthusiasm, it seems he has liked her since he first came to our home when he was in the 7th grade. He is now in the 9th.

Over the last few weeks the relationship between him and my son has changed. Weekend trips to our home are now strictly so this young man can spend time with my daughter and not so much to spend time with D.

defeated1 has become an assistant chaperone rather than a friend and a brother. The two boys can't even seem to spend time hanging out doing guy stuff without her; not because of her but because this fellow wants to hang on her constantly and talk about her all the time.

D's little sister is pretty emotionally detached and knows that sometimes guys want to do guy things. Sometimes she wants to do things with her friends too.

I think this will likely end in tears. The boy is very clingy and he will either get bored with the lack of physical interaction or her emotional remoteness. D agrees that it probably won't last but for right now "it sucks".
