Know the Basics

Know what magick is. Know different ways to raise, direct and ground energy. Know how to cast a magick circle. Know how to open a circle. Know the basic outline of a spell.

Know the Intent or Purpose

What is it you are trying to do? Heal an illness? Increase your concentration? Bring love into your life? Sell a house? Celebrate a Sabbat? Before you begin any magickal working, you should have a firm grasp on what outcome you are seeking.

Know the Best Time to Work the Spell

Do you know what type of magick should be worked during the waning moon and what type during the waxing moon? What type of magick is best worked on the full moon? The new moon? What days of the week are best for what types of magick? Learn how the moon phases and days of the week affect magickal workings so you will know when to work your spell.

Know Correspondences

Learn which colors will bring what results. Learn a little about herbalism; which herbs can be used for what magickal purposes. Learn about image magick and how it works. Learn about elemental magick; which elements can be used for what types of magick.

Basic Working Spell Outline

We all have different ways and routines when doing spells and rituals. Below is a basic guideline suggested by many books and web sites that you may find helpful if you feel that following a structured routine will work best for you, or if you aren't sure where to start and need a guideline. These are not set in stone and can be changed to suit your needs.

Ritual Preparation

Choose a time. Decide the intent. Choose an aspect of the Divine, if you wish. Decide how to raise energy (ie: dance, chanting, drumming, etc.) Choose how to cast and close the circle.

Cleanse yourself and your magickal space.

You can do this with a ritual bath for yourself, or through meditation to still and focus your mind. You can cleanse your space with your magickal broom or with incense or burning herbs.

Cast the Circle

Invocation of the Divine

Statement of purpose

This is simply to tell the Divine why you have called Him/Her to the circle; what you are trying to accomplish.

Magickal Working

Raise energy, through chanting or drumming or however you have chosen to do so. Direct or channel this energy by using candles, herbs, stones or whatever other correspondences you found to fit your specific need. Ground your energy when you have completed the working.

Cakes and Wine (optional)

Eat a small piece of bread or cookie and drink a little wine, milk or juice to help restore your energy.

Thanking the Divine

Closing the Circle

Basic Spell Construction

18:19 Jun 27 2009
Times Read: 559

Because of the very nature of Magick, each working should be highly individualized and personal. Even if following a traditional spell, it should be tailored to your specific needs to be most effective for you. Understanding the basics of Spell Construction will enable you to formulate your own specific, effective spells for any purpose you desire.

Preliminary planning is necessary. The very first step is to decide precisely what your desired end result is to be. Before you can start, you must decide where you are going. You must be very explicit.

It is important, also, that you choose your time carefully. You should take into consideration all Astrological implications, energy currents and Moon phases.

The Moon is the astronomical body closest to us and, therefore, has a profound influence upon us, it is very important to choose a time when the Moon is in an astrological sign which is appropriate for your working. For example:

Aries/Action - Enthusiasm

Taurus/ Renewal -Sensuality

Gemini/Communication -Curiosity

Cancer/Emotion - Nurturing

Leo/Vitality -Determined

Virgo/Organizing -Studious

Libra/Balance - Cooperation

Scorpio/Sexual -Philosophical

Sagittarius/ Strength - humor

Capricorn/Authority - Ambitious

Aquarius/Innovation- Social

Pisces/Sensitivity - Idealistic.

Bear in mind that magickal workings for gain, increase or bringing things to you, should be initiated when the Moon is Waxing (from New to Full); when the Moon is Waning (from Full to Dark), it is time for magickal workings of decrease or sending away.

The highest energy occurs at the Full Moon and, therefore, this is the most powerful time for magickal workings. The New Moon is the next most powerful time for Magick.

Whenever possible, follow Nature's natural Energy Currents. There is a natural time for starting things (a planting time), for maturing things (a growing time), for reaping things (a harvest time) and, of course, a time for rest and planning.

Flowing with these currents will make your magickal work much easier.

Remember to plan your project for a time of uninterrupted privacy. It is important that you have no distractions. Generally speaking, it is best to work as late at night as possible. A time when there is less frantic energy is most appropriate. You might consider Midnight or later.

In choosing a place to do your magickal working pay particular attention to your needs, for you must be comfortable. Your place should be private, quiet and secure. If at all possible, set aside a special place for this purpose only. An unused room, a special corner of your bedroom, a quiet, secluded spot in your garden. A place that is yours. A place that you can come to whenever need arises and that is as free from intrusion of others as possible.

Prior to the night of your magickal working, gather together the things that you will need. All of the things used are tools. They have no inherent magick. They are to help you create a mood. If correctly made and used, they will trigger primitive responses from deep within you. They should be chosen with care. Consider the purpose of your ritual and choose your tools accordingly. If your magick is to be sexual, your candles, oils, incenses and so forth, should bring forth a sexual response. If the desired result of your Magick is Tranquility, then the tools should make you feel calm, peaceful and serene. Any candles you might use should not have commercially added fragrances as these may not be appropriate for your working.

Prior to your ritual, prepare yourself and your equipment by any means necessary to clean and purify. Historically, people have fasted, followed meticulous and detailed bathing practices, practiced chastity and used many other methods.

Most often a Ritual Bath is the preferred method. A bath frequently utilizing candlelight, fragrant herbs, bath salts or sensuous oils. A sumptuous hot bath, special bathing preparations and appropriate lighting, combined, can create the soothing effect which will help in the very important step of relaxing and clearing the mind completely of all mundane thoughts and experiences of the day. Your ritual Bath should, also, begin to set the specific vibrations conducive to your purpose into motion. You must not only cleanse and purify but must, also, begin to create the type of energy necessary.

Once your purification process has been accomplished, you are now ready to begin. Proceed to the special place you have previously chosen in which to perform your magick. If at all possible, you should make use of the primitive responses set into motion by a well chosen piece of music. Your music should start slowly and build to a rousing climax.

As you use your oils, light your candle or incense (or utilize any other tool you have chosen), you should begin to further intensify the energy that you have set into motion around you. A high degree of intensity is vitally important.

The Altered State of Consciousness that you must reach is not a meditative state. Anything that interferes with your ability to concentrate upon, reach and control the high energy state necessary to perform magick should be avoided. Such as, screaming children, a sink full of dirty dishes, use of alcohol or drugs, etc.

Do not scatter your energy by attempting to do more than one magickal working at a time.

Remember that Magick is the manipulation of energy, a thought is a form of energy and a visualization is an even stronger form of energy. Your visualization can be a method used to intensify further and direct your will. Your visualization can be the method by which you control the magickal energy you have produced. You must know what you want. You must see it. You must feel the high energy flow. You must direct it.

One of the most important elements in the practice of any form of Magick is the Universal Law of Cause and Effect. This means that whatever you do (or don't do) you cause something to happen.

The most important consideration is the Universal Law of Retribution. This means that no matter what you do, it comes back to you in like kind.

It is the nature of things that as you send something out it gains momentum, so that, by the time it comes back to you, it is three times stronger. If you do something nice for someone, someone will do something nicer for you.

"As you weave and spin your spell, Three fold return the tale will tell."

BLESSINGS

Blessing of the Book of Shadows

by Silver Ravenwolf

Hearken as the witches' word

calls to All, a gulf to ford.

Bridge the vast realities,

An it harm none, do as ye please.

Elements protect and guard this book,

From wandering eyes and prying looks.

Fill it with thine ancient power,

In this right and ready hour.

Powers of North, the East below,

Help me to live, to learn, to grow.

Lend your strength and stability,

To practice the Craft and with love be free.

Powers of East, the Wind, the Sky,

Watch over these pages with thine eye.

Your wisdom and knowledge, for these I do ask,

That this book be worthy of the Craft and its task.

Powers of South, Fire, and the Hearth,

Help these Shadows to prove their worth.

Infuse them with all your Healing and Passion,

So only good comes from the Work that is fashioned.

Powers of West, the Water and Sea,

Change and growth are granted by thee.

Bless these pages with all that you know,

That righteous readers may learn and grow.

And to the unschooled eye that see

Confusing words and sophistry,

Lead them from these sacred pages,

And bless their passage through the ages.

For free will of all,

And harm of none,

As I have willed it,

It is now done.

So mote it be!

Bless You

Bless you for your Anger, for it is a sign of Rising Energy.

Direct it not at your family, waste not on your enemy.

Transform the energy into Versatility and it will bring you prosperity.

Bless you for the times you see evil.

Evil is energy mishandled and it feeds on your support.

Feed it not and it will self destruct. Shed light and it will cease to be.

Bless you for your jealousy for it is a sign of empathy.

Direct it not at your family. Direct it not at your friends.

Transform the energy to Admiration, and what you admire will become a

part of your life.

Count your blessings everyday for they are your protection which stands

between you and what you wish not.

Count your curses and they will be a wall which stands between you and

what you wish

Native American Prayer

Oh Great Spirit,

whose voice I hear in the winds,

and whose breath gives life to all the world

-hear me-

I come before you, one of your children.

I am small and weak.

I need your strength and wisdom.

Let me walk in beauty and make my eyes ever

behold the red and purple sunset.

Make my hands respect the things you have made,

my ears sharp to hear your voice.

Make me wise, so that I may know the things

you have taught my People,

the lesson you have hidden in every leaf and rock.

I seek strength not to be superior to my brothers,

but to be able to fight my greatest enemy, myself.

Make me ever ready to come to you,

with clean hands and straight eyes,

so when life fades as a fading sunset,

my spirit may come to you without shame.

New Project Blessing Spell

Do at the New Moon

Maiden Goddess, you who sprout from tiny seed, the Earth throughout,

Bless this project with your joy and those of us in its employ.

Mother goddess, you who flower and bring beauty to our daylight hours.

Bless this project with your hand and the fertile bounty of your land.

Ancient Goddess, you who rest and reseed all used things with your breath,

Bless us with your intuition, help bring this project to fruition.

Bestow your blessings, Triple One, and guide us 'til this project's done.

from the book Everyday Magic

by Dorothy Morrison

Computer Blessing

Blessings on this fine machine,

May its data all be clean.

Let the files stay where they're put,

Away from disk drives keep all soot.

From its screen shall come no whines,

Let in no spikes on power lines.

As oaks were sacred to the Druids,

Let not the keyboard suffer fluids.

Disk Full shall be nor more than rarity,

The memory shall not miss its parity.

From the modem shall come wonders,

Without line noise making blunders.

May it never catch a virus,

And all its software stay desirous.

Oh let the printer never jam,

And turn my output into spam.

I ask of Eris, noble queen,

Keep Murphy far from this machine.

- Zhahai Stewart, 1988

Pet Blessing

Do each pet separately. Light a white candle and then, holding your pet (or its picture), kneel before the altar and recite the following prayer:

O Great Horned God, father of the woodlands, and loving lord of all creatures that walk crawl, swim and fly.

A threefold blessing I humbly ask of thee on this special day:

May (pet's name) life be a long, happy and healthy one.

May (s)he always receive your divine protection.

And when our incarnations in this world cease to be, may we forever be reunited in the great Wiccan otherworld known as the Summerland.

Blessed be!

Chant name of pet and Blessed Be three times.

- Raven Silverwing

White Candle Spell for Blessing

Get a white candle-either a plain one (offertory, pillar, or taper) or a figural one in the gender of the person you want to bless.

Carve the person's full name on the candle, then dress it with Blessing Oil or Holy Oil.

For more power, you may place a name-paper of the person, or a photo, or some personal item of theirs (such as a bit of hair or a snippet of clothing) either under the candle or next to it. One easy way to do this is to place the paper or personal concerns under an overturned saucer and put the candle on top of the saucer.

Burn a portion of the candle every day for seven days, pinching it out between burnings. As you light it each day, say this

[Name], may you be blessed

May all good things come to you

May nothing whatsoever harm you

May your heart be light

May your travels be safe

May your health be good

May your mind be sound

May your friendships sustain you

May you be blessed in every way

If you have a special request for this person (such as that they find a lover, get a good job, come home safely from a war, or whatever), just add it to the list.

Some people use a large pillar-type candle and keep it going for longer than seven days.

They may make a habit of burning such a candle every day-or once a week, on Sundays -- for as long as their friend or relative needs help, even doing so for months at a time.

If the candle is large and it is to be burned in this way, it should be re-dressed with Blessing Oil or Holy Oil once a week: after the initial dressing, you can drop a tiny bit of oil into the "well" or hole in such a large candle just before lighting it each time.

***********************************************

Helping Mother Earth Heal Those in Need

For those not skilled in magick and spells, you can lend strength and energy to those in need simply by lighting a green candle and doing the following: Picture a white ball of energy coming out of your chest (near the sternum or breastbone). At this point you may wish to say a few words or simply focus on the pain and suffering coming from the group you are focusing on (refugees, starving children, etc). You are offering this energy to any and all who need it, so try not to focus on any one person or face from the papers. From deep in your chest, *push* the ball. You will feel the muscles in your chest pushing and your shoulders drawn in toward the center of your torso. This will send the energy to the place and group you were thinking of.

Remember, one person can make a difference. In addition to magick, why not call the Red Cross. Find out what groups are doing relief work in Albania, Somalia, Serbia, etc. Volunteer to collect canned goods, clothes, blankets, etc.

**********************************************

To convert the senses This blessing gives the body more connection with the spirit.

It may also help with your readiness to channel. To be done at night in the moon's view.

Extravagance is not appreciated. Light a large white candle.

Burn sandalwood and basalm and pine. Prepare a bowl of water sprinkled with salt.

Put this before you and touch it to each part of your body.

To the eyes

Bless my eyes that I might have clarity of vision

To the mouth

Bless my mouth that I may speak the truth

To the ears

Bless my ears that I may hear all that is spoken and not

To the heart

Bless my heart that I may be filled with love

To the uterus

Bless my womb that I may be in touch with my creative energy that stems from the universe

To the feet

Bless my feet that I may find and walk my own true path

Fill yourself with understanding, and from that love.

Extinguish candle when done (can be used for other purposes).

The Charge of the Crone by Jim Garrison

19:17 Jun 26 2009
Times Read: 571

I am the Queen of Magick and the Dark of the Moon, hidden in the deepest night. I am the mystery of the Otherworlds and the fear that coils about your heart in the times of you trials.

I am the soul of nature that gives form to the universe; it is I who awaits you at the end of the spiral dance.

Most ancient among gods and mortals, let my worship be within the heart that has truly tasted life, for behold all acts of magick and art are my pleasure and my greatest ritual is love itself. Therefore let there be beauty in your strength, compassion in your wrath, power in your humility, and discipline balanced through mirth and reverence.

You who seek to remove my veil and behold my true face, know that all your Questioning and efforts are for nothing, and all your lust and desires shall avail you not at all.

For unless you know my mystery, look wherever you will, it will elude you, for it is within you and nowhere else. For behold, I have ever been with you, from the very beginning, the comforting hand that nurtured you in the dawn of life, and the loving embrace that awaits you at the end of each life, for I am that which is attained at the end of the dance, and I am the womb of new beginnings, as yet unimagined and unknown.

The Charge of the Goddess by Doreen Valiente

19:17 Jun 26 2009
Times Read: 572

Listen now to the words of the great Mother: she who of old was also called among men Artemis, Astarte, Athene, Dione, Melusine, Aphrodite, Cerridwen, Diana, Arianrhod, Isis, Brigid, and by many other names:

Whenever you have need of anything, once in the month, and better it be when the moon is full, then shall you assemble in some secret place and adore the spirit of me, who am Queen of all Witches. There shall you assemble, you who would learn all sorcery, yet have not won its deepest secrets; to you will I teach things that are yet unknown. And you shall be free from slavery; and as a sign that you be free, you shall be naked in your rites. And you shall dance, sing, feast, make music and love, all in my presence; for mine is the ecstasy of the spirit, and mine is also joy on earth; for my law is love unto all beings. Keep pure your highest ideal; strive ever towards it; let nothing stop you or turn you aside. For mine is the secret door which opens upon the land of youth, and mine is the cup of the wine of life, and the cauldron of Cerridwen, which is the holy grail of immortality. I am the gracious Goddess, who gives the gift of joy unto the hearts of my people. Upon Earth, I give the knowledge of the spirit eternal; and beyond death, I give peace, and freedom, and reunion with those who have gone before. Nor do I demand aught of sacrifice; for behold, I am the Mother of all living, and my love is poured out upon the Earth.

Hear the words of the Star Goddess; the dust of whose feet are the hosts of heaven, and whose body encircles the universe:

I who am the beauty of the green Earth, and the white moon among the stars, and the mystery of the waters, and the desire of the hearts of men and women, call unto your soul: arise, and come unto me. For I am the soul of Nature, who gives life to the universe. From me all things proceed, and unto me all things must return; and before my face, beloved of gods and of people, let your innermost divine self be enfolded in the rapture of the infinite. Let my worship be within the heart that rejoices; for behold: all acts of love and pleasure are my rituals. And therefore let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honor and humility, mirth and reverence within you. And you who think to seek for me, know that your seeking and yearning shall avail you not, unless you know the mystery: if that which you seek, you find not within yourself, then you shall never find it without. For behold, I have been with thee from the beginning, and I am that which is attained at the end of desire.

The Charge of the God by Ray Fagan

19:17 Jun 26 2009
Times Read: 573

Whenever you have need of my strength and power, or when my sun reaches a spoke of the great wheel, then shall you assemble into a holy place and cry out for the king stag, who is the sacred King of all witches.

I am the king stag, who leads and protects the herd. I am the white hart who is chased but can never be caught, the wild goat who would give his last breath to create new life, the unicorn and the dragon of legends ancient wrought, and the dark horned hunter who strikes terror into the night! I am the sun and the wind and the sea. I am the storm and the lightning and the thunder. I am the stone and the fire and the steel. I am the blade which can cut men asunder. I am life, and I am death. I am nature. Love me and respect me -- or fear me. The choice is yours.

I am the lusty young satyr who spawned you, the loving father who raised and protected you, and the wise old man who taught you wisdom during your life and understanding during your death. I will be there each time you are born, each time you fall in love, and when you die, for I do love you.

These are the three great magicks which you shall learn at my hand: birth, love, and death. For these are the three greatest changes of life; and what is magick, but the ability to effect change? The secret of life is that it is incomplete without death. The secret of death is that it is but a doorway to new beginnings. The secret of love is that it never dies.

Serve me with strength and gentleness. Protect mine with courage and mercy. Worship me with mirth and with reverence. Sing, dance, make music, and make love, all in my name, for all acts of love and joy are my rituals. And remember, if you find not that which you seek within yourself, you shall never find it without; for behold, I have been with you from the beginning and am that which is attained at the end of desire.

Here is another prayer to the Goddess, this one gives thanks for the beautiful world around us! :)

Oh Goddess, I thank thee today, for all that is wonderous and good.

The sparkling ocean that lays in the bay, the trees and the plants in the wood.

The sun and the moon and the stars in the sky, the grass and the earth on the ground,

Goddess my spirit lifts so high, with thy beautiful design so abound.'

Prayer to the Goddess

19:15 Jun 26 2009
Times Read: 575

This is a prayer I use to invite my guardian angel, and put myself in the right frame of mind before casting spells. I'm pretty sure it was the first spell I ever wrote- before I had done enough research to find out about the concept of circle casting, so it can be used with, or instead of a circle. I think it could quite easily be modified to accommodate other guardians, Gods, and Goddesses, so I hope other people like it!

Love, light and blessings, Kitty

Spells by Kitty

Note from Heather: I have called this "Prayer to the Goddess" since I think that is what most of the people will use it for. Simply substitute "angel" for "Goddess" or the particular goddess of your choice. I wrote a "Goddess version" below Kitty's angel version. Thank you Kitty for sharing this. It's a beautiful spell/poem.

I call upon you (name of angel), angel divine,

I stand before your sacred shrine.

Spread your wings, let in the light,

I pray you help me do what's right.

Help me steer from what is wrong,

and any evils for which I long.

Help me live out every day,

according to the righteous way.

Let your voice ring loud and clear,

to comfort me of all my fears.

And if I ever shed a tear,

I pray (angel's name), that you'll be near.

Your guidance I need through this life,

I pray you never leave my side.

And when in times my faith is weak,

in you, (angel's name), please let me seek.

I call upon you (angel's name), angel divine,

I stand before your sacred shrine.

Heather's edited Goddess version

Consecrate an Object

19:15 Jun 26 2009
Times Read: 576

Light some incense, preferably myrrh or patchouli and a white candle. You will also need a bowl of water and one of salt. Take the item, cover it with salt, place your right hand over the bowl (unless your left handed, then use your left) and envision a white light leaving your palm and passing through the bowl, washing away all negative energies. Then say:

"Blessed Lord and Lady, with salt and smoke I consecrate this tool in your name. Let it serve me well."

Remove the item from the salt, shaking off the salt as you do so, then pass it through the incense smoke, sprinkle it with water, then pass it through the candle flame. Your item is now consecrated.

Charging an Item

19:15 Jun 26 2009
Times Read: 577

After you have consecrated a tool or item, you should charge it.

Hold the item above your head. Take a moment to feel the swirls of energy around you. You should be able to feel them tug at you like a current in a river.

In a clear voice, say:

Let the sacred powers of the universe unite and fill this (item name) with energy. By the Moon, the Sun, the Earth and the Stars I charge this (item name) to do my will. So Mote it Be! Close your eyes and envision an energy bolt striking the item and causing it to glow. You should feel a subtle vibration while you hold the item.

Your tool is now charged.

Casting and Uncasting a Simple Circle

19:14 Jun 26 2009
Times Read: 578

If you have one, set your altar in the center of a clean area. If not, simply sit/kneel/stand on the floor in the center of a cleared area.

Light one white candle. Envision a circle of white light around you (and your altar).

Face North and say: Hail to the guardians of the North, mighty earth who feeds us, our home and mother, welcome to the circle.

Next, face East and say: Hail to the guardians of the East, blessed air who cools us, the breath of life in all, welcome to the circle.

Next, face the South and say: Hail to the guardians of the South, sacred flame that sparks life in all, our protection and father, welcome to the circle.

Finally, face the West and say: Hail to the guardians of the West, Waters of life, where all are cleansed and reborn, welcome to the circle.

Proceed with your ritual. At the end do the following:

Face the West and say: Hail to the guardians of the West, thank you for attending this circle. Go in peace and know you are always welcome here.

Face the South and say: Hail to the guardians of the South, thank you for attending this circle. Go in peace and know you are always welcome here.

Face the East and say: Hail to the guardians of the East, thank you for attending this circle. Go in peace and know you are always welcome here.

Face the North and say: Hail to the guardians of the North, thank you for attending this circle. Go in peace and know you are always welcome here.

The circle is now broken and your spellwork complete. At this time, snuff your candles and do any parts of the spell that require you to leave the circle (burying an item, scattering the ashes etc.)

Moon Phases and Spellwork

19:10 Jun 26 2009
Times Read: 581

Depending on your spell, you should aim to cast it in harmony with the cycles of the moon to achieve the most effective results. Below are the phases of the moon, what they mean, and what sort of spells are good to do during each phase.

New Moon

The new moon is the beginning of the lunar cycle, and means that the moon is completely in line with the sun and the earth. We see a dark sky with no visible moon. It's a time of newness and rejuvenation. The new moon is the three days after the new face of the moon and also includes the day of the new face of the moon.

Spells: New beginnings of any sort, beauty, health, personal improvement or new employment.

Waxing Moon

The waxing moon is the period of time between the new moon and the full moon. Every night, the moon gets a little larger. Any spellwork that requires growth should be done now.

Spells: Courage, motivation, inspiration, friendship, elemental magick, healing or luck.

Full Moon

This is a time when the Moon is at its most powerful, and the magic most potent. Performing any positive spell at this time will achieve good results. Since the full moon only truly occurs for one night out of the entire lunar cycle, it can be hard to fit it into your schedule. You can harness the energy of the full moon for about 2 days before or after the night the moon is truly full.

Spells: Artistic projects, love, romance, fertility, psychic abilities or making decisions. Also healing, guidance, and completion spells.

Waning Moon

The moon is waning as it gets smaller again, after the full moon. As the moon seems to disappear in the sky, use this time to do spellwork to remove things from your life. The waning moon is a good time for the casting out of the old ways, banishing old habits, smoking, eating habits, the removal of troubles and worries.

Spells: Banishing bad habits, addictions, or ending relationships

Typically, there is one full moon every month, but since the lunar cycle is a bit shorter than our calendar months, there is sometimes two. The second full moon in any given month is called a blue moon.

I want to mention the Dark Moon here, also called "The Dark of the Moon" because I find it very interesting personally. Many witches do not bother themselves with the dark moon or are not aware of the meaning of it. Below is a description of the dark moon.

Dark of the Moon - The Dark of the Moon (or Dark Moon) is traditionally the last three days of the Lunar cycle, immediately preceding the New Moon, and the time when the night sky is notably absent the presence of the Moon. George [1] notes that: “The earliest peoples understood that the power of life lay in the darkness of the moon.” “The purpose of the dark phase of any cycle is that of transition between the death of the old and the birth of the new. The dark time is a time of retreat, of healing, and of dreaming of the future.” i.e. the fallow times preceding outbursts of creativity and growth.

“Most of us do not realize we all have many dark phase times in our lives, and that these are naturally occurring periods in any life cycle. We fail to understand that endings are the precursors to new beginnings; thus when our life rhythms move us into and through these dark phases, we are ignorant of what is actually happening.” [1] It is the grandeur of Death and Rebirth, not merely an ending with the proverbial ride off into the sunset.

“The dark phase of the cyclical process is a phase of healing and renewal rather than one of fear and unknowing; a time of mystery, wisdom, and healing power -- all gifts of the Dark Moon Goddess.” [1]

“There is less energy available for outer activities and meeting the expectations of others, because the purpose of the dark phase is for focusing on the inner dimensions of our bodies and minds. If we can learn to attune ourselves to the natural rhythms of ebb and flow in our lives, we can use the intrinsic function of the dark times for healing and renewal. When we resist this inward motion in our psyche, then anxiety, stress, and fear are more likely to take hold of our emotions.” [1]

“The Triple Moon Goddess, in her new, full, and dark phases, was a model for the feminine nature in her entirety as maiden, mother, and crone. In her original worship the Dark Goddess, as the third aspect of this lunar trilogy, was honored, loved, and accepted for her wisdom and for her mystery teachings of renewal.” [1]

Spells: Healing, renewal, psychic spells. A good time to meditate on the inner self.

A Witches Daily Correspondences for Spellcasting

Some witches, mainly Wiccans I believe, do their spellwork on certain days of the week, depending on the theme of the spell. They believe that the day of the week holds a special significance to the theme of their spell.

Here are the weekly planetary correspondences. You can use these to determine which days of the week you may have better luck with the spells you are casting.

Monday: The Moon; best for emotionally based spellwork, such us attracting confidence and intuition, protection spells, clairvoyance etc..

Tuesday: Mars; great for spells to inspire passion and energy such as a spell to boost confidence. Mars is a warrior, so if you need a spiritual battle, this is the day for it. Tuesday is also a good day for protection spells.

Wednesday: Mercury; Great for communication (worldly or otherwise). Good for spells involving the granting of information. Like Willow in Buffy when she says "Reveal!"

Thursday: Jupiter; probably the best day for spell work as Jupiter is so benevolent and loves to give. All prosperity spells or luck and success spells should be done on this day (be sure to keep it with the waxing moon).

Friday: Venus. . .ahhh, sweet love. This is a day for love spells and also a good day to offer your love to the gods/goddesses of choice. As the Cure say, "Friday, I'm in Love!"

Saturday: Saturn. A restrictive energy. Good for banishing spells and ridding old energies. Binding spells are also potent on this day. Also good for focusing and developing patience (something a lot of witches don't have). Typically, I do not do spells on Saturdays unless it is to get rid of unwanted energies or desires.

Sunday: The Sun; Truth in all matters. The sun is great for truth spells and generating warmth in your heart. If you feel that you are frigid inside and holding tons of resentment, use the Sun energy on Sundays to shine through a cloudy heart.

Color energies are useful in many ways. One of the most basic ways to use color symbolism in magick is to select candles of the color appropriate to your purpose. The power of color may be added at any point in rituals and spells to enhance the symbolism, and thus the power of the spell.

Examples include:

* Candles

* Altar Cloth & Flowers

* Fabric and components for Amulets, Talismans, Dream Pillows, etc.

* Food coloring choices in Bath Salts.

* Label/Container choices for brews, teas, essential oils etc.

* Meditations on colors for reaching specific chakras, or areas for psychic development.

* Garments for ceremonies or simply on days when you wish to attract (or deflect) certain energies.

* Colored papers and inks for written spell work.

* Awareness of colors you select in your decor and environment.

As with most things magickal, how you feel about the color and your aims is the most important guide. If a color feels right to use for a purpose, even if it is not listed here, use it! As shown in the varying and sometimes overlapping associations above, the power and meaning of colors varies somewhat form person to person.
