Could dragons have once existed?

Here's a simple exercise that points the way to "yes".

First lets look at the evidence. Nearly every single major and many minor cultures have tales of dragons. Some are massive fire breathing beasts and others are bit more "down to earth".

Now fossils have been found and known about for thousands of years and their misidentification may have played a role in the myths of dragons, giants and monsters but I'm not so sure that's the only explanation. And remember that many stories and myths have a basis in reality.

If we look at current animal species we find that many reptiles continue to grow their entire lives and under perfect conditions (with increased lifespans) some could reach mammoth proportions. We also know of certain insects who have 2 glands that contain various chemicals. When the insect sprays them at a threat the compounds mix and create an explosion of hot, noxious goo and smoke..or "fire".

Not every type of animal follows the same method of locomotion as their cousins. Not all birds fly, some squirrels do (in a sense), some fish can walk on land and "fly" out of the water and so couldn't some reptiles also exhibit flight like motion?

Even in the fossil record we have examples of "lizards" with feathers and wings.

Evolution is about trial and error and if one animal has a particular trait it's a good bet that at some point another species had the same.

So let's look at the numbers.

There are currently around 1.4-2 million known species alive today with an estimated 100 million possible species that have not been described. Over the course of life's 4 billion+ year history 99.9% of ALL life has gone extinct.

Including bacteria, in all, there may have been over 10 billion different living things. If we take out life forms smaller than an inch in size we could be looking at something like 200 million species.

Our fossil record includes some 200,000 known species, 200,000 out of 200 million. That means only 1 out of 1,000 are known and a good many animal species may not have any fossil remains due to low population, living environment, nature of their extinction etc.

So if we take a look at all of that is it not possible that some type of "dragon" may have existed? Now I'm not saying they did but to say it's impossible for them to have existed just ignores logic.
