Schools Out for the Summer

23:53 May 22 2010
Times Read: 622

Well, school is out for the summer, at least for the kids. Teachers still have another week of meetings and such. The question of the day is this...what do you do with your kids for the summer? It has to be relatively inexpensive...but does that even exist in this economy? Not around here it doesn't for sure. There are a few free things we can find to do but most really add up when its for three or four people at a time. Well, it's only 80 days without school right? It should go by pretty quickly. No, it doesn't actually lol but it's a nice dream. Perhaps a road trip home would be a good idea. We've not been to see family in a while. Oh, what to do...what to do?

Schools

02:27 May 15 2010

School is almost out for the summer here. Kids have one week left. However, there is a new superintendent of schools here. He was brought in to help the school system. His ideas are way out the box in thinking. Some I can agree with but others are just ridiculous.

First, with the legislature in session here now, he's gotten a bill passed and named after him. This bill is to keep other members of the school board from doing what he calls micromanaging. Basically, he just wants what he says to go without question.

Second, he piloting year round schooling. If it works out then in another two years all schools here will be extended so that students get out in early July rather than May and then start back in early August.

Third, he wants to pay teachers based on how students perform on state standardized tests or on district tests. I wonder if he realizes the majority of students in this district come from single parent, low income, underage parents, and in some cases...families are homeless. How can a teacher be expected to make a child want to perform high in school when the second that child leaves school they are going to deal with issues that most people of our generation have yet to deal with?

I'm just ranting I suppose but I feel that some of the decisions hes making are not right. He needs to step back, look at the socio ecomonics of the majority of students in school and plan how to help the teachers and parents who do care and are trying their best.
