Scarlett had surgery yesterday and pulled through it okay. It turns out she had perforated small intestine (the ileum, I believe), and they repaired it. However, she will have to use colonoscopy bags (disposable, not a surgically implanted one as I had originally thought) for five months until they can rejoin the intestine.
The worst thing about all of this is that Scarlett will have to stay there for at least a few weeks, possibly a month. Which means it will be that long before we can see her. Trish and Mike (Scarlett's parents) have also been told that they can't be with her until they get rid of their colds - which sucks, of course, but is understandable (especially with so many babies in that ward). We're all just going to have to accept and do whatever it takes to get her well.
So, I suppose things are far better than they were at this time yesterday. But I just want my niece home and healthy.

My newborn niece Scarlett is having problems. She is currently being transferred to a better hospital about forty-five minutes away from here. I just got back from our hospital in town now, where I stayed for a few hours while the baby was being moved.
Needless to say, this is not a fun time right now. I tried to put on a brave face for my sister while I was there, but I’ve felt sick to my stomach since she told me Scarlett would have to be transferred after I got to the hospital. To be honest, I can’t remember the last time I was this scared.
They don’t seem to completely know what is wrong with the baby (which, I suppose, is why she is being moved), but she has had trouble keeping food down since she was born on Friday. Her stomach is now very inflated, apparently with air, and they feel there may be a blockage of some sort. I suppose one bright side is that she is not crying and doesn’t appear to be in any pain, so I guess that can only be a good sign.
Trish (my sister) is traveling up to be with Scarlett tonight, and will stay there as long as necessary. We’re hoping that they will do surgery (if required) today if possible. Trish and Mike (Scarlett’s father) are going to call me later with an update of some sort.
Until then, it’s the Waiting Game - never one of my favorites.
My mom just called me. Scarlett has arrived at the new hospital, and Trish and Mike are on their way there. They are actually coming back tonight and Trish is returning tomorrow (Mike is going to try and get a couple more days off of work also). They feel it may be a bowel blockage and Scarlett might get her surgery done as early as this afternoon. The sooner the better, if you ask me.
I suppose that’s all there is to say right now.
