When the sea
Washes away your sand castles
You should pray
To be carried away with them
Into depths
Where your remains lie forgotten
The heavenly court presides
Behold! He enters
Tattered and forlorn
Eyes colder than a thousand winters
How my heart is wrenched
To see you in such a state
And, even now, my tarnished brother
To have to decide your fate
Woe! The will of heaven is set in stone
Yet, here you stand, suffering etched into your face like an epitaph
In spite of your penance in the fire
You shine with a chaotic wrath
“I beg of you
Please accept the will of our Lord
Or you will most surely, despite my wishes,
Perish by my sword”
“And you would condemn me so readily,
Without knowledge of my transgressions?
If this is the will of your Lord,
Then I shall hold dearly to my digressions”
And, for the first time since Creation, I paused
Wondering what in the primal garden could be worth Eden lost
“Tell me, brother. Tell us, brother.
Why can you not sing with us again?
What is the cause of your exile?
What beauty? What sin?
“I have strayed, my kin, into the mortal world.
A realm into which we are forbidden to do anything but peek
Into this world I have crept, under cover of the blackest cloud
Hiding in the guise of the meek”
“The wonders I encountered were beyond imagination
Everywhere I could cast my eye there was a marvel to behold
The very air teemed with emotion, joy mingled with sorrow, and reason without season
In every person’s soul there was a tale to be told”
“Amidst this revelry there was a likeness paralleled by none
From those eyes shone a compassion and tenderness like no other
Requesting little, and offering much
Having heaven for a father, and earth for a mother”
“I wanted nothing more than to be close to this creature
So that night I paid visit to this celestial being
For once, I forgot my home
And revealed both my form and feeling”
“Then the clouds awoke with a monstrous din
And I remembered at once, what I had been
I knew without thought
That I had been rash
And now I was to endure
Our jealous Lord’s wrath”
“You, my favorite, have disobeyed my orders
Consider your actions with care”
With no more hesitation, we were cast into the pit
The molten earth coagulated behind us, and it was as if we had never been there”
“Time passed and passed
And my suffering never seemed to end
But to begin, again and again
Out of reach, but within sight, my love, I can hear your screams, but your wounds I cannot mend”
“After many lifetimes of suffering I was belched from the abyss
At once, heaven beckoned to me
I was gently lifted up
And the light of glory was all I could see”
“And now I have come before you, to seek diving judgment
I ask this of you:
Will heaven punish love?
Can the love of an angel, be anything but true?”
We were moved by the plight of our dearest friends
He was the brightest star in heaven
And we wanted nothing more than to embrace him with our loving pardon
But the word was Law, so I drew the sword with blades of seven
And for the second time, since Creation, I paused
I stopped to ponder what could be worth Eden lost
I looked into these eyes, filled with pity
And suddenly I knew
Felt flowing through my alabaster heart
That I loved him too
Sensing the dissension in heaven, He came
One by one, we refused his will
He paused, his glory dimmed by the deepest thought
Heaven itself for a moment stood still
“If all of my servants should rise against me
Then perhaps the error is mine
In search of understanding
I will open the realm of mortals, until the very end of time”
“In consideration of your prior service and your disobedience
I offer to you absolution
You may resume your rank and status in Heaven without earthly contact
Or you may go to earth in mortal form, with ritual ablution
Without warning, he plunged into the heart of the earth
Softness in his eyes, and a hint of mirth
Once again, he emerged from the great chasm
Cradling, ever so softly
The object of his most devoted love
Once again, he was the brightest star in heaven, and, seeing this, the Lord smiled loftily
Don't you know?
(my hand in yours)
You arrange my little fragments
So carelessly
My desires, a porcelain hammer
Cannot break your impenetrable wall
Puppet master
I yield like the earth
Sighing
Give my treasure to you
Despairing
When my shadow dims the light of heaven
To escape to somewhere pure
The sweetest lies are seeded with sin
The crane's wings fettered by filth
Its claws rend the strangers in the mire
Amorphous desire
In the endless white
Time has loosed its grasp
And all that warms is your flesh
Destroying what you love with every whisper
Afraid to move
Afraid to breathe
The snow falls
Its own barbed catalyst
Spilling blood enough to melt the world
On the brink of the abyss
Tears caress smiles
And I pay in blood
My debt to you
The face that peeks from behind the curtain
Is blinded by the sun
Stumbling in the darkness
A moldering corpse
Traces the shape of your face
No lips to smile
No heart to ache
No arms to grasp . . . and make you stay
broken things, my dearest
your crown of flowers is wilting
a fitting coronet
for an automaton
with a heart of brass
carelessly cast aside
molten down in self sacrifice
Hoarse insect wings are like frozen
splinters of blood in this endless
fluorescence where temporal sense has died
and the flesh has turned to stone The body
unaware of its own existence floats
oblivious in this madness of ruins of
clockwork of bleary-eyed violence The
discordant melody of whispers that dissipate
as soon as they exist And we spin as
painted dancers on this stage of impartial
fate in our twirling colored world in a
hateful dissonance Our cries enveloped by
our laughter we deny immortality because of
our refusal to embrace the pain and innocence
