Schwarzenegger to star in proposed new "Terminator"

01:54 Apr 28 2011
Times Read: 722

.LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - He said he would be back, and now Arnold Schwarzenegger is doing just that.

The action movie hero turned politician is attached to star in a new "Terminator" movie being shopped to Hollywood studios, an industry source said on Wednesday.

Schwarzenegger, 63, who played the killing machine cyborg in three of the blockbuster movies with the catch phrase "I'll be back", is on board to reprise a role that helped make him one of Hollywood's most successful and recognizable stars, the source said.

The news follows the end in January of Schwarzenegger's two terms as governor of California, and his announcement in February that he was ready to take movie offers again. He has already announced he is developing a TV show and comic book based on his political nickname "The Governator."

Industry website Deadline Hollywood reported that Schwarzenegger's talent agency Creative Arts Agency (CAA) was presenting a proposal regarding the "Terminator" this week to major Hollywood studios that would revive one of the industry's most successful franchises.

CAA declined to comment on the report.

Deadline Hollywood said there was no screenwriter attached so far. It was unclear whether director James Cameron, who wrote and directed the first "Terminator" movie in 1984, would be involved in the proposed new film.

Schwarzenegger starred in three "Terminator" movies but actor Sam Worthington took the main cyborg role in the fourth installment, "Terminator Salvation" in 2009.

The four movies have grossed more than $1.4 billion at worldwide box offices.

Schwarzenegger put most of his movie star life on hold while serving as California's Republican governor from 2003-2010. But he made a well-received cameo appearance in the 2010 movie "The Expendables" along with other aging action heroes Sylvester Stallone and Jet Li.

Phoebe Snow, 'Poetry Man' singer, dies at 60

19:53 Apr 26 2011
Times Read: 735

By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY AP Music Writer The Associated Press

Tuesday, April 26, 2011 11:16 AM EDT

NEW YORK (AP) — It wasn't long after the release of "Poetry Man," the breezy, jazzy love song that would make Phoebe Snow a star, that the singer experienced another event that would dramatically alter her life.

In 1975, she gave birth to a daughter, Valerie Rose, who was found to be severely brain-damaged. Her husband split from her soon after the baby was born. And, at a time when many disabled children were sent to institutions, Snow decided to keep her daughter at home and care for the child herself.

The decision to be Valerie's primary caretaker would lead her to abandon music for a while and enter into ill-fated business decisions in the quest to stay solvent enough to take care of Valerie.

Snow, who worked her way back into the music performing world in the 1980s and continued to perform in recent years, died on Tuesday from complications of a brain hemorrhage she suffered in January 2010, said Rick Miramontez, her longtime friend and public relations representative. She was 60.

Snow never regretted her decision to put aside music so she could focus on Valerie's care. She was devastated when her daughter, who was not expected to live beyond her toddler years, died in 2007 at 31.

"She was my universe," she told the website PopEntertainment.com that year. "She was the nucleus of everything. I used to wonder, am I missing something? No. I had such a sublime, transcendent experience with my child. She had fulfilled every profound love and intimacy and desire I could have ever dreamed of."

After her stroke last year, Snow endured bouts of blood clots, pneumonia and congestive heart failure, said her manager, Sue Cameron.

"The loss of this unique and untouchable voice is incalculable," Cameron said. "Phoebe was one of the brightest, funniest and most talented singer-songwriters of all time and, more importantly, a magnificent mother to her late brain-damaged daughter, Valerie, for 31 years. Phoebe felt that was her greatest accomplishment."

Known as a folk guitarist who made forays into jazz and blues, Snow put her stamp on soul classics such as "Shakey Ground," "Love Makes a Woman" and "Mercy, Mercy Mercy" on over a half dozen albums.

Snow's defining hit, however, was "Poetry Man," which she wrote herself. The song, anchored by her husky voice and a fluid guitar, was a romantic ode to a married man. It reached the Top 5 on the pop singles chart in 1975, and garnered her a Grammy nomination for best new artist.

Soon after that, her daughter was born. She was born with hydrocephalus, a buildup of fluid in the brain cavity that inhibits brain development. Snow's husband, musician Phil Kearns, left her while Valerie was still a baby.

For years, Snow fought the diagnosis of Valerie's mental condition, but in 1983, she told The New York Times that she had accepted her daughter's fate.

"I've finally settled into realizing that my daughter is what she is," she said. "Any progress she makes is fantastic, but I no longer foresee any miracles happening. I went through phases of the occult and of trying to find every single doctor in the country who could possibly do something. I realize now that I can't move mountains."

While she was caring for Valerie, her career started to take a downward spiral. Inexperienced in the music business, she broke contracts with record companies and others, and found herself embroiled in a number of lawsuits and severe financial problems.

"With my quick success, I didn't have time to learn the ropes of the music business," she told the Times in the same interview. "Because my first record was such a hit, I was terribly spoiled and I thought I couldn't do anything wrong. I was also desperate to make tons of money because of my responsibility to my daughter. And there was no longer any joy in making music."

She started to make her way back into the music business and by the early 1980s was performing shows again. In 1989, she released her first album in eight years, "Something Real." She also supplemented her income doing through the 1980s and into the 1990s by singing commercial jingle for companies including Michelob, Hallmark and AT&T.

Among her other hits was her duet with Paul Simon on the song "Gone at Last." She also sang "Have Mercy" with Jackson Browne.

Snow was born Phoebe Ann Laub to white Jewish parents in New York City in 1952, and raised in Teaneck, N.J. Though many assumed she was black, Snow never claimed African-American ancestry.

She changed her name after seeing Phoebe Snow, an advertising character for a railroad, emblazoned on trains that passed through her hometown. Snow quit college after two years to perform in amateur nights at Greenwich Village folk clubs.

In her later years, Snow continued to make an impact musically. She sang the theme for NBC's "A Different World" and the jingle "Celebrate the Moments of Your Life" for General Foods International Coffees. She also sang at radio host Howard Stern's wedding to Beth Ostrosky in 2008 and for President Bill Clinton, who asked her to perform at Camp David during his presidency.

In 2003, she released "Natural Wonder," her first album of new, original material in 14 years. Her other albums include 1989's "Something Real," and 1981's "Rock Away." In 2008, she released a live album titled "Live" and a best-of CD in 2001.

After her daughter died, Snow continued to perform. Despite her devastation; she dedicated each performance to Valerie's memory.

In an interview with CBS' "Sunday Morning," she said sometimes it was difficult for her to perform, as she remembered her daughter.

"And then other nights I feel like it's my strongest connection to her and it's my way of sharing her with everybody," she said.

A private funeral is planned for Snow, who is survived by her sister and other relatives.

I adored this song when it came out-here's a reminder of what a gifted voice she had...

Casting Call: Kate Beckinsale Headed To 'Total Recall' Reboot?

22:12 Apr 21 2011
Times Read: 761

..Move over Sharon Stone - Kate Beckinsale might just be the new "Total" package.

The British beauty has reportedly been offered one of the female leads in Sony's reboot of the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger classic "Total Recall," according to Deadline .

Stone played Schwarzenegger's on-screen wife, Lori, in the original, and it's reported that this is the role offered to Beckinsale.

Colin Farrell will star in the role of Douglas Quaid, originally played by Schwarzenegger.

The reboot is being directed by Beckinsale's husband, Len Wiseman, who also directed/produced his wife in the first three "Underworld" films.

As for the other female lead - the role of the alien ally, Melina - actresses including Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson have been mentioned as possible contenders for the part.

"Breaking Bad" Emmy winner Bryan Cranston will reportedly play the villain, Vilos Cohaagen.

Production on the film is expected to begin in May, with an August 2012 release date targeted.

Sony had no comment on the Beckinsale report.

Beckinsale is currently shooting the fourth installment in the "Underworld" franchise, which Wiseman is producing, slated for a January 2012 release.

She recently wrapped production on the action smuggling film "Contraband," starring Mark Wahlberg.

3D porn film beats Avatar at Hong Kong box office

17:44 Apr 21 2011
Times Read: 773

.A Hong Kong movie billed as the world's first 3D porn film has broken the city's first-day box office record previously set by Hollywood blockbuster Avatar.

"3-D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy" took in HK$2.8 million ($360,000) on its first day last week, outpacing director James Cameron's science fiction epic which drew HK$2.6 million, the porn movie's publicist told AFP Thursday.

The film has taken more than HK$15 million since its release, she added.

Curious movie-goers from all walks of life -- office workers, retirees and students -- stood in long queues outside Hong Kong cinemas on the film's first day last week, eager to catch an eyeful of the steamy 3D action.

Loosely based on a piece of classical Chinese erotic literature, the $3.2-million Cantonese-language movie features orgies, swinging and some very graphic sex scenes.

Set in the Ming dynasty, the film chronicles the story of a young man who, after being introduced to the erotic world of an aristocrat, realises his ex-wife is the love of his life.

The film stars Japanese adult actresses Yukiko Suo and Saori Hara.

The movie, which opened in Taiwan last Friday, and has sparked strong interest in many Asian markets, including Japan and South Korea, as well as Europe and the United States, according to the producer.

Travel operators were reportedly organising moviegoing excursions to Hong Kong and Taiwan for tourists from mainland China, where strict censorship rules prevent any screening of the film.

"3-D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy" opened ahead of reported plans by other filmmakers to produce similar 3D porn movies.

Italian director Tinto Brass has announced he is to produce a 3D remake of his 1979 erotic film Caligula, while Hustler plans to release a pornographic spoof of Avatar, the top-grossing movie of all time.

I went to work yesterday, to move everything over in the downstairs bar in preparation for the coming opening of golf season.

*yes, Jaime, I know- I was supposed to go back to not doing everything for everybody. What can I say; self preservation is a powerful thing...lol*

As i left the house at 9:45 am *snort* I noticed it was raining but that the "rain" was a little thick, if you know what I mean.

By the time I turned onto the street by the clubhouse, it was full out snowing, and continued to do so for the next 2 hours.

Unfortunately, it also almost all melted by the time I left at 3:30 that afternoon, but still...

As of now, I have been snowed on in BC and Kentucky. Life is good...lol

That's what I get for reading journals

I took a tip from Ms. Carnelian Mist. And while I didn't have the pleasure of an entire boxed set of British drama, I did have my copy of "All About Eve", one of my all time favorite Bette Davis movies. That, and the last bit of cross stitch I needed to do on Mrs. Birdy's wedding present, and a beautifully sunny day for light behind me, and I was set for the afternoon. Not a bad way to end a day that started WAYYY too early, what with doing inventory at work at 9 am.

I cannot wait to get my sewing room finished. But I have a feeling it will never be completely done- I'll always be tweaking it. But unlike last time, where everybody in the house dumped their trash and junk in my room for want of a better place, I have a husband and a set of inlaws who have already helped me enormously, with woodwork, a desk and cutting table (courtesy of my inlaws turning Steve's office at work into their new apartment), and suggestions.

*sigh*

It is so lovely to be happy in my life for a change. Thanks again to CarnelianMist for setting me in the right direction...lol
