The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5 (DSM-5) has both sociopath and psychopath under the heading of Antisocial Personality Disorders. These two disorders share many common behavioral traits which lead to the confusion between them. Key traits that they share include:
A disregard for laws and social rules
A disregard for the rights of others
A failure to feel remorse or guilt
A tendency to display violent behavior
But they have many differences as well. So lets define each one by its self.
Sociopaths lean more towards being nervous and easily agitated. They are dramatic and prone to emotional outbursts, including temper tantrums and fits of rage. They are likely to be unable to hold down a steady job. It is difficult for them to form attachments with others but it can happen. They may find it easier to get attached to inanimate objects rather than people. To others sociopaths will appear to be mentally disturbed. Most of the criminal activity by a sociopath will be haphazard, disorganized and spontaneous rather than planned.
Psychopaths are unable to form emotional attachments. They do not experience empathy. But they can mimic emotion, they just do not experience them as other do. They often come off as charming and very likable people. They are very good at manipulation and gaining trust. They will most likely be educated and will not have any issue maintaining a job. When committing crimes, they are well organized. Psychopathy is thought to be a genetic factor. Psychopathy is considered to be the more dangerous of the two,
