Nevaeh, a play by Franki Facker
NEVAEH
Scene set in a foggy set of woods in South Carolina. A red pickup truck stuck in the ticket of it all with a dead battery. Camera pans in on young Jack’s face. He’s distraught. The light comes in from the back and all around the pickup you can see nothing but an increasing fog. Camera pans around the scene and falls at a framing distance of Jack in the truck.
Narrator: A fog so thick it silently smacked harshly against deaf ears. He turned the key again. "Pa t t t pu t t t " came from his brand new ford. He turned the key once more, the truck made an abnormal screech and now even the lights had gone out. But he didn't panic, his father always told him not to panic. He breathed in and out slower and slower until he was completely relaxed. His phone vibrated. He reached into his pocket feeling his phone he smiled.
Jack looks down to his phone, and camera scoots in.
Jack: "Must be Katie"
Flipping the phone open, it’s restricted.
Jack: "Stupid kids"
Narrator: He closed the phone and tried the key again. Nothing this time, the truck was completely done for. He flipped the phone open again about to dial when he realized the screen was black. He closed the phone and opened it again, still black. He held the power button, to no such luck. He spit, getting more and more agitated at the gaining seconds. He had no idea where he was. The fog was as thick as ice and he had no way of calling anyone to pick him up. He collected his hat, keys, and wallet. He opens his wallet on instinct. There in the fold a picture stood out, Nevaeh.
Light falls on the small picture of the beautiful blonde. Jacks drumming heart beat is the only sound as the camera pans up to jack and moves in on his terrified expression. Now pamera pans in and our making Jack seem delirious.
Narrator: Out of nowhere he started getting chills up his back. Where did that picture come from? He wasn't allowed any of her pictures after she died. Her parents hated, and blamed him that much. But it was his fault. He looked at the picture again shaking it off and tucking it safely back into the fold, just as he did his pocket started vibrating again. Feeling compelled to answer he jerked the phone out and flipped it open. RESTRICTED it read. Shakily he answered.
Jack: "Hello...?"
Narrator: There was a buzz in the background, a crash. The voice almost sounded familiar. He heard a splash. He heard a scream, Nevaeh's scream.
Jack: "NO!”
Narrator: Jack shuts the phone off. His brow was now seeping with a nervous sweat. He opened the phone again, black. He felt himself getting dizzy. Was he crazy? What was going on? Where was he? A thought struck him he looked around. He heard the water.
The camera pans out of the truck, and on to the surrounding area of the woods. The fog looks to be an eerie green and the trickle of water gets to be a sickening volume. Then as flashback begins, pan in on car accident. A little car flipping in the woods, Jack being pinned in his seat as his girl is thrown from the car in a heap. The light falls on his desperate face as he screams to the world.
Narrator: Jack finds a familiar path and followed the muddy trail to the lake. It all came back: the detour to the concert, the ice on the trail, the little neon flipping over, and over again and again. She screamed the whole way down; Crashing into the lake, and him unscathed. The steering wheel had pinned him. He sat there remembering her door busting open, and the endurance and impact of the car slinging her limp body out of the car. He was overwhelmed with helplessness and the pain of her scream. He had just proposed to Nevaeh. Both 17, they had decided to stay together forever. But now where was forever? He made a silent prayer, or request. "Please don't make me let her go" he screamed "Don’t you leave me Nevaeh! I told you not life or death!"
The camera takes a view of the woods giving a spinning dizzy affect. The light fades in and out the later becomes louder the echoing crash plays over and over and over.
Narrator: He screamed himself unconscious. But he, unlike Nevaeh made it. Tears rolling down his eyes, he looked down as his phone started vibrating again. He opened the phone. The screen flashed KATIE
He answered the phone.
The sounds fade out as a young woman’s voice rings out there the phone, Katie.
Jack: "Hey baby sorry I'm late my truck broke down and…"
Katie cut him off.
Katie: "Jack, I'm done with you. You’re late for the last time. I've been calling you all night and you've just ignored my calls. And when I finally got an answer some girl told me to fuck off, that she was your girl. I'm over your rotten cheating ways!!"
Narrator: The line went dead. He was so confused. He walked back to his truck and cried against the wheel. Something inspired him to try the key again. He stuck the key in the ignition and it fired up just fine. He smiled. Then His phone Vibrated again. He hoped Katie had changed her mind and was calling to say she was sorry. After all there was a mistake. She had called the wrong number his phone had been dead, and there was no other girl. Katie was the only other girl Jack dated... after Nevaeh. He flipped open the phone and said softly
Jack: "suddenly remembered I’m not a cheater huh?"
There’s a different voice on the phone. It’s not Katie this time it’s a new girl, Nevaeh. Jack is unaware the voice at first. His confusion fills his face as the camera sets on the frame of it.
Nevaeh: "No Jacky, you were a cheater. But I fixed it baby. I love you. Have you missed me?"
Narrator: Jack grew cold and confused the woods began to seem as though they were spinning.
Circling motion of the camera the fog gets thicker the crashing noises re-emerge and the terror fills Jack’s eyes.
Jack: "What…"
He began but instead he looked at the phone to scan over the caller I.D. That read...
Light falls on the phone framing the caller I.D. alone. The same is clearly printed across the screen.
Jack: "That can't be right"
Narrator: He shouted. Her sing song voice repeated.
Nevaeh: "You have missed me, right Jack?"
The clear name played across his phone’s screen is Nevaeh. Crash’s volume reaches the max and echoes as the camera zooms out of the frame of Jack’s terror stricken face.
Fright echos the hollow of his troubled mind. The light fades away, as he steps into something he, himself could never fathem. Blood sucker, that's what you call her. Monster, that's what she is. Pray once in life, now pray again, is all he's ever been, because he's lost all strength. Stuck forever following her, through every last disaster, he now makes his way through her lifeless house. He sees her in the corner of what used to be her room, she has cumbled to her knees. For a long while he watches her, unable to be afraid at such a sad individual. But then he remembered all the pain. He winced. She looks up at him, all sorrow melted away. Fervently, her emotions run thick across her heated face. Her eyes scream "you want me, but you just don't want to me like this." He realised these things are now spoken by her raspy voice out loud. She cocks her head to the side and looks at him with sinester concrete eyes. "might get me anyways, Jack." The light fixtures played color and fragments that twinkle in his own, frightened eyes and sprinkled across his worried face. "your the one who left me Nevaeh, What was I to do? Come after you? I'm trying to put on this show that your gone, I can stand there andlie to myself and the world, but not you Nevah. You'll neve let me go." The look she gives him leaves his blood cold. She carefully pulls herself to her feet looking at him with new ravenous eyes. Something in them confuses him. "Nevaeh, I want this to stop now. Just let me go. Let this go now." She smiled at him and stepped close. He could already smell her sweet perfume. Her now dusty honey curls fell loosly down her back. Her bangs grown out wildly caressing her dead face. He tired to shake this feeling off, but it comsumed him. Her smiles slide across her face and it thickly ran up to her eyes. "you don't really mean that, do you Jack? You don't really want to leave me Jack. Why would you leave? We are so happy, aren't you happy Jack?" Her voice was growing harsh and cold but the joy in her eyes flickerd on. Jack tried to speak, but choked on his words. "your not leaving me jack, you love me, you love me forever. You will never leave. You promised, remember Jacky?" Her eyes looked almost sad as she took his hand and kissed it with ice cold lips. "you promised me that not life or death would keep us apart. Jacky here I am, and you promised me forever."
