The room was icy cold as she sat bolt upright in the bed. The moonlight casting black and white stripes through the louvred windows.

The shivered, clutching the bed clothes to herself, and heard the noise again.

Scratching.

She caught her breath as her delicate fingers brushed her lips as if to stifle any noise, and again the noise came.

Ssccccccccccrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaatch.

It was outside. Perhaps in the garden.

She shifted to the edge of the bed, and moved her feet through the sheets, over the side of the mattress. They found the floor.

Ears sharp for the noise again, she stood and crept to the end of the bed.

This afforded her the position of being able to see into the garden, without being seen.

The garden was empty, sparkling in the moonlight with the jewels of frost.

Ssssssssscccccccccccccccrrrrrrrraaaaaatch.

She froze.

There, in the centre of the garden, at the dove cote. A dark figure.

And then she saw the source of the noise.

With the manner of a cat, the dark figure lengthened, and jumped. Vertically. To the top of the dove cote .

It landed on the steep pitched roof, and sat for a second, and then slid back down, leaving the marks of it's nails in the wood.

Sssssssssscccccccccrrrrrrraaaaaaaatch.

It did it again.

But this time, she saw it's face.

Twisted and stark, predatory. It's forehead crumpled into a frown. It's eyes searching, through the window of her very room.

She gasped and stepped back creaking the floor boards under foot, glancing down she heard the scratch of the roof and a soft thump as the creature landed.

Then silence.

Standing stock still in the freezing night air, she hardly dared to breathe, but there were no noises and the figure did not appear again.

She crept to the window and her cold hands fumbled at the louvred shutters.

She opened them and looked into the garden.

The skeletal trees throwing shattered patterns on the lawn, sparkling and irridescent, then heard the noise again.....

The scraping noise came from below the window. Stealing her breath, she glanced down the wall and there she saw it. Cloaked in black, it's hands, porcelain white and twisted into cruel claws. The fingernails long and sharp, dug into the wooden cladding of the house.

She drew back into the room as it raised its head to look at her.

It's eyes were pitch black, it's white, papery skin pulled taut over the bones beneath, grotesque and mask-like.

It's teeth - visible under the snarling blued lips, were chiselled razor sharp points.

Stock still she listened in abject horror as the scraping made it's way to the bottom on the window, and when she saw the claw like hand reach over the sill, she promptly fell to the floor in a dead faint.
