FAnfare for the End

“Fanfare for the end”

My teeth ached so strongly that I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to completely control myself, in mind, body or even spirit. I wanted to bite her and change her into my soul mate right then and there, and it was what she wanted, but I knew there were other things I would have to deal with first. I licked my lips nervously, hearing the fanfare of the monarchs as they came closer to our hiding spot. She sank in the darkness, clutching my shirt in apprehension. I sighed discontentedly as her sobs bore into my cold as stone body.

“Shhh, love. I love you. Don’t be frightened.”

I briefly kissed her forehead, and felt shocked at how unusually hot her skin was. I knew she didn’t want any of this to happen but…

I quickly called upon my magic to still her frantically beating heart to a hush monotone. Her eyes glazed over and she slumped at my side, sleeping. I brushed her brilliant black hair off her face and laid her gently back in the shadows, praying to a God that hated me to keep her alive until this horrid war would pass.

The trumpets blasted harshly, daring me to come out of my sanctuary. The Emperor wanted me and I knew that he must never find out about her. Emperor Hirohito of Japan was not a cruel man, but he obviously could not stand the site of my kind in his glorious country of Japan. But I felt that we could coexist, and my love of his niece should be proof to that… he was an ancestor of the sun goddess, Amaterasu, and even the sun and moon lived side by side.

My veins harden as the procession passed my hole. I too, shrank back into the shadows. The drums rolled like thunder in the sky, asking blessing to Amaterasu, no doubt, and the trumpets blew one thick shrill note that rattled my bones to the core. I felt a desire to cover my ears and drone out the noise, but I knew that if I did, the magic concealing our position would fall. But I had to take action soon.

I caught sight of Hirohito-San as he passed by me, right in the center of the procession. I knew vaguely that he was dying of cancer, and that was going to help me along with the process of our redemption. I took a deep breath and released my magic from the palm of my hand. No one would be able to see it except for Hirohito-San and I, and I would be the last thing he saw. I watched triumphantly as his eyes widened and he tried to tell his search party that I was standing not ten feet away from him. But words died in his throat as he performed the act itself.

I turned back to my true love and found her staring at me with a faint smile. I held open my arms to her and she fell into my cold embrace gratefully, her blood screaming in anticipation. I let my teeth graze her neck softly and the fangs shouted for relief to their unfair hunger.

We walked the streets of Japan and the moonlight shone its triumph for our kind. My new Empress of the night was dashing in her kimono of white silk, and I knew that now, with her second in command, the Sun and Moon would be able to walk together through Japan and that the war between our kind was over…for now.
