Imagine a society that subjects people to conditions that make them terribly unhappy then gives them the drugs to take away their unhappiness. It is already happening our own society. Instead of removing the conditions that make people depressed modern society gives them antidepressant drugs. In effect antidepressants are a means of modifying an individual's internal state in such a way as to enable him to tolerate social conditions that he would otherwise find intolerable

If you're claming that the social conditions in the West or US are so horrible that people need to be medicated then you're delusional. Try living in North Korea.

I didn't take your entry in the same way the commenter above did. I've often thought about what you are saying myself. If we live in a society where so many require "a pill" to be happy, it would seem more logical to change the conditions of said society rather than promote acceptance and conformity with a drug. It's also interesting that you misspelled "depressant" in the title, making me think of de-present, implying one is avoiding a present state of mind. I don't know if that was intentional or not but it somehow seems appropriate. That said, I do understand a prescription is the best option for some.
