Chills crept over warm flesh, shivers seizing muscles in unconscious reaction to the still partially winter-bitten air. Despite the warmth of the sunlight for only a short time, the devastating howling of the wind seemed to have stolen all traces of paradise offered, leaving the moonlit night silent, a gentle breeze whispering through Kalera's dark mane as her eyes lifted skyward. Eternal darkness stretched beyond her ability to see, stars speckling the near perfect shade of the night, though in her mind's eye, for only a brief moment, the sky lit up to a near-perfect blinding white of countless galaxies, shadowed only by the moons and planets eternally circling each distant sun.
Slowly, her head shook, allowing the breeze to capture strands of hair, stroking them gently out of her face as her entire body turned, facing into the wind completely. A mortal mind grasped back to the events of the past, guilt surfacing at the aggressive reaction she had displayed internally to the idiot girl's words. Yet, rivaling the guilt was an echo to her instinct to attack, a fierce pride that was born of nothingness in that instant, colored a black purer than the night surrounding her. Eyes slid away from the purest form of visible eternity to gaze into the treeline, a large open plain separating her from a taste of wilderness that she had been starved of for many years prior to this moment.
Another breath of air crossed her bare skin, shoulders and arms exposed to the cold caress, reminding her of the black jacket wrapped tightly around her waist. Without lowering her gaze, her still form broke into movement, the thin fabric adding just a perfect extra layer of protection, the red of her shirt vanishing almost completely. Increased movement, she knew, would add a burst of warmth between her flesh and the coat, insulating her almost completely, yet instead, she froze once again, this time almost perfectly, transfixed by the lure of the open grass and the forest just beyond it.
Kalera's senses opened up completely in that instant, her imagination painting the hiss of traffic passing behind her, not far beyond the parking lot she had pulled into just minutes ago. Her feet had pulled her forward, off of the stable concrete, and onto the grass, and it was at that border that she almost felt life come to a stop. Death lay in the city at her back, life all around her and before her. In that moment, it felt so perfect, that she could have sworn one step backward would have placed her back against a wall. Eyes widening for a moment, she shut her eyes tightly, pushing away at such thoughts, her heart beginning to race at the thought of being cornered.
Energy was building inside of her, however, and it was impossible to ignore. No matter what she did, the hum filled her entire body, mind to toes. Muscles tensed momentarily, then relaxed before they began to move. Eyes opening once again, she began to walk forward into the night, lured by the promise of freedom. Freedom from law, freedom from words, freedom from all that bound and terrorized her within society. A savage call rose inside of her, a sound she only wished she could utter, much akin to the howl of a wolf seeking comrades. She wanted to hunt.
That moment of realization pulled her into a firm stop, her mind recoiling harshly to such thoughts. She had never killed anything in her life. At least, not on purpose. Death always surrounded her if she let loose for only a moment, and now she was pulling herself harshly inward, binding such thoughts under tight chains of denial. What would she hunt, anyway? She couldn't... wouldn't... and wasn't able to besides! Frozen, fear rose slowly inside of her, the pounding of her heart now adding another layer of sound to the land around her. Yet, in that moment, she heard not only herself and the wind, but everything else as well. The call of the crickets, the thrill of a bird startled into flight so late at night. The rustle of the brush... when had she gotten so close to the forest?
Slowly, her gaze pulled away from what is before her, glancing back hesitantly. The parking lot seemed so far away, it caused her stomach to clench uncomfortably. Faintly, she could make out her small white car, shining in the night like a beacon under the moon's glow, safety beckoning her back to reality. And yet... Her gaze focused back to the forest ahead, her jaw setting against the discomfort raising within. Pushing her fears aside, deciding everything in that moment was overreaction and over thinking, she began to move forward again.
The scent of the trees were welcome to her as she took refuge from a strong gust, her slender body pressing hard against the unyielding wood, the texture felt through the black coat that allowed her to blend into the darkness so easily. Her eyes shut once again in relief as the wariness aroused from before began to fade. The forest was her true home, it always had been. Her childhood had been spent wandering independently from her parents before she could even remember, and stories of her past had suggested this wild behavior was her true nature, not the shy creature her father's harsh words had created.
A smile crossed her face, not at the thought of her own kin, but at the recollection of the other wooded areas she had been to, the creatures she had seen in her past, drawing them out into the night. Without an ounce of hesitation lingering, she pushed away from the tree, straightening with new authority, the master of this domain as she began to tred into the unfamiliar territory, heedless of a momentary prickle at the back of her neck.
"In the moonlight I felt your heart... quiver like a bow string's pulse... in the moon's pale light, you looked at me.... nobody knows your heart..." she began to sing, her voice beginning in a soft whisper as she recited a favorite melody, short and soul-touching. Though the song wasn't her own, it filled her with a sense of understanding, causing her to raise her voice with increasing confidence as no other soul answered her voice.
"When the sun has gone, I see you... beautiful and haunting but cold... Like the blade of a knife, so sharp, so sweet... nobody knows your heart... All of your sorrow, grief and pain locked away in the forests of the night. Your secret heart belongs to the world of the things that sigh in the dark. Of the things that cry in the dark..."
Stalking slowly, numb and mindless, gaze lowered to the ground, yet jaw set firmly. Steadily pressing farther and farther away from the stream of life that threatened to overwhelm her until her side touches a cold wall. Dark eyes turn away from the light of a nearby window, chin lifting resolutely as she peers into the eternal flow of humanity. A soft sigh escaped as her eyes half-close, tension easing from Kalera's lithe form as those around her went on, heedless of her internal blazing desires.
Without warning, she began to move, weaving effortlessly back into the flood of bodies, her pace quickened with a hint of urgency, an internal clock forever ticking in the back of her mind, telling her that time was almost up. Freedom was at hand. Or, it was, save for two forms standing at the base of the stairs her feet were treading. Lovers who were oblivious to the world blocked her path, speaking poetic words that fell on deaf ears to anyone else around them.
Her movements shifted to the left, then the right, yet the staircase was far too narrow. So, without a moment's hesitation, she moves straight down the middle, pressing through both of their personal bubbles.
"Bitch," whispered into her ear in passing. The girl had dared? A silent growl echoed in the youth's mind as she spun, coming to a stop. Both stared at her, yet neither seemed to notice Kalera's eyes settle onto the girl's throat. For a horrifying moment, raw desire peaked within a mortal mind. If only she could just show that girl her place in the world... her lips curved into a smile in answer to their glares, turning once again with purpose as she renewed her pace.
Sunlight bathed over her in greeting once she had escaped, fresh air whispering into her ears, a soothing melody no human could utter. Lifting her head skyward, her eyes closing against the brightness of the still day, the fire from the sky rained down gently over her body, soothing and eternal, stoking the blaze burried deep within her small frame. Sanctuary.
