It was around 2:30pm today, when I was on Fry St. to talk to some friends, before I had to be at work at 4pm. This apparent religious flake had been passing out fliers to come join a church ceremony to "celebrate God's victory over the evils of witch craft," by burning copies of the latest Harry Potter book, (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) which is due out at 12:01am, this Saturday morning, He approached me to offer me an invitation to come and join in the event. This guy was dressed in a coat and tie, about middle aged, bald, and held a King James version of the bible in his right hand. He showed me a bible verse in the book of Acts that encouraged the burning of evil books like Harry Potter to "glorify the triumph of God's Word."



"Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together and burned them before all men and they counted the price of them and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed." Acts 19:19-20



The highlights of the "conversation" went something like this...



I told him that I wasn't interested, and that he was in the wrong area to be handing out such things, because he won't find any children or parents of children to harass about buying the work of good literature.



"Harry Potter is evil" guy: Harry Potter promotes Witch Craft, and Satan is telling JK Rawling thank you for writing books that open children's minds to The Occult.



Me: That's nice, now go the fuck away.

He gave me the flier to his book burning event, which really pissed me off. I ripped up the flier and threw it in his face and walked off. I do not feel the need to elaborate on the obvious, why I believe Harry Potter is good for children...but to the numb skulls that I need to ramble the obvious to, I can give brief reasons why. It is an adventurous piece of literature with that allows childrens' minds encouraging the use of their imgination away from the things that dumb their minds like television and video games. It teaches them classical ethics, such as self-sacrifice, the importance of friendship, virtue, and the ultimate triumph of good over evil, along with the psychology of why all of these qualities are better than the sinister motives of hate, anger, and aggression that Lord Voldemort and his political cronies that practice the dark side of sorcery, hidden within the "Ministry of Magic." This is nicely depicted in the film "Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix," when Harry Potter's thoughts are possessed by the spirit of Lord Voldemort. He tries to tap into Harry Potter's hatred, and haunt it through his anger, fear, and resentment that he had for the killer of his his parents in his past. Harry Potter ultimately escaped his possession, telling hinm that he'll never know what true friendship is, what it's like to love someone, and that he felt sorry for him. Most of the spells in Harry Potter are done in tongue and cheek fashion, anyway, similar to other child movies like "The Sword in the Stone," or "The Princess Bride," that the religious finatics over looked their protest. These are all ethics that are mentioned in the bible, and ethics that will always stand the test of time. God forbid, we try to censor te evils of Harry Potter that allegedly warp our children's minds, and encourage them to read a book that tells the masses to stone witches, and goes into explicit detail, why we should put sinners to death, and their ultimate suffering in an eternal pit of flames for not hanging thei hopes on a cruscified carpenter that died two thousand years ago. I think my children are doing fine with tongue in cheek magic, that celebrates Christian holiday, next to religious fucks that want to nail their ideals and crucifixion commercials into us and our youth.
