 Chapter Two 

We sit for a while, listening to Lucy talk me through her brother’s current situation. Every so often she looks at me and I know the majority of this is up to me. I may not be a skilled tracker, but so long as the little rascal keeps his collar on, it shouldn’t be too hard to follow his movements.



At this point in time, it may be easier if I clear up a few things before we continue. Firstly, I am not human, but that’s a matter of opinion. I appear human most of the time and, besides my eyes, consider myself pretty well disguised.

Lucy is my ex-lover, not ex so much by the result of our own decisions, but by….circumstantial changes. Her ‘brother’ is, in fact, our son. But no-one except she and I know this, it’s just easier to explain this way. I’ve not been around as much as I would like.

The collar is for his own benefit, it keeps him in his animal form when Luce can’t keep an eye on him. Personally I think he makes a better cat than human, but ultimately it’s just safer. There are a lot of less noble men around here who would happily take charge of a young boy in order to make a few coppers, most would ignore the cat. The collar also has a tracking device embedded in it, so we can always find him.

Although it seems Lucy’s tracker is playing up, luckily for me, my hearing is pretty damn good, and I can recognize his collar’s signal easily. Only problem is I have to be in my less amiable form, as my ‘human’ ears are slightly out of tune.

Still got no idea who this Charlie guy is though, besides a thief.



“Ok, now Kieran, you need to uh… change, and I’ll show you where to start looking. Charlie, come with me and I’ll give you what is owed for your services.”

Services? “Luce, can I speak to you for a second please?”

I take her aside while Charlie noses around in the ornaments again. Whispering furiously I ask her who the hell this guy is and what ‘services’ he’s been doing.

Scowling she replies, “For god’s sake Kieran! He’s a friend, I asked him to help while I was waiting for you.” Poking me for emphasis.

I flinch a little, “Ok, ok, I’m just worried that’s all. The little rascal is part of me too, and I’ve neglected him, I can’t help but think this is my fault too, you know.”

She softens a bit and hugs me.

“I know, I’m sorry, I’m worried too, I don’t know where he is for the first time in his life and I....”

She looks into my iridescent green eyes with tears in her own and whispers, “I’m… scared for him, oh Kieran please find him, I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t get him back—”

A loud crack and the sound of tinkling glass interrupts our little discussion. Putting her face in her hands, Lucy turns to Charlie, who’s frozen, holding the handle of what would have been a rather expensive, now completely worthless, blown-glass wine pitcher.

“Oh, my god, CHARLIE!” she screeches, “WHAT DID I TELL YOU ABOUT TOUCHING THINGS??”

Bashfully he mumbles something about being really, really sorry and forget the payment, and with his head low he scoots out of the room as fast as his little legs will take him.

Breathing deeply, Lucy sits strangely calm on the couch with a blank expression on her face. Warily I sit beside her, hesitantly putting my arms around her shoulders.

Suddenly she starts sobbing and crashes into my arms, clawing at my shirt. She begs me to find our little boy, swearing if I don’t she’ll surely die.

Jeez she’s a drama queen, but that’s why I love her.

Holding her tightly, I reassure her that I will find him, even if it costs me my life.

Damn it had better not though, I need my life.

Slowly the tears dry up, and exhausted, she drifts off to sleep on my lap. Getting up is a tricky business, quickly trading my leg for a pile of pillows and covering her with a silky blanket from one of the other chairs.

Sighing I go to the next room and ask one of the guards to look after Lucy while I have a poke around in town, see what I can find.

 Chapter One 

The hyped crowd cheers wildly to nothing. Rhythms thud through overheated bodies, lights flashing with every drumbeat. Arms waving, heads bobbing and the smell of sweat and alcohol in the suffocatingly moist air. Bodies left, right and centre, all jammed in together, bumping into each other, but never falling; there’s no space left free to land. So easy to slip unnoticed through them, I could have half a dozen knives strapped to me and nobody would notice. A little smile curls my lip as I laugh inwardly at my own private joke.

I drift smoothly to the corner of the bar and yell over the counter for a whiskey, a can of cola and a glass with ice. The guy knows me, and immediately scuttles around grabbing my order, even though there is another gentleman standing at the front of the bar, obviously waiting for his drink. It helps to know a few….tricks to get attention without scaring anyone. Ok, ok, so my eyes aren’t exactly a normal human colour, but then I’m not what you’d call a normal human.

I glance up to see an alluring woman in a rather skimpy dress staring at my ass. Yeah I got a nice ass, too. I roll my eyes and turn back to my drink with a smug little smile. Seconds later, a slim hand lands on my shoulder and a silky voice whispers in my ear.

“Kieran, you’re late.”

With a grin, I turn and run my finger down her cheek.

“Madame I am never late, you are simply early.”

She raises a well-manicured eyebrow and chuckles.

“I shall remember that for next time, as for right now, we have some business to attend to.”

I down the last of my drink and clunk the empty glass down on the bar, gaining a dirty look from the man still waiting for his cocktail.

“Very well, lead the way my good lady.”

She saunters off through the crowd, and I follow close behind after flashing a wink at the scowling gentleman, earning myself a rude show of fingers.

Phew, I’ll have to watch myself with that one.

Grinning to myself, I watch as my lady-friend orders the guards to stand outside and, well, guard.

She ushers me inside and shuts the door, moaning about how thick the new guards are and that she really needs to get a new recruiter who knows what he’s supposed to be doing. Silently wandering around the room, poking and tossing some fragile-looking items in the air, I wait for her to finish and tell me why she called me here.

Nervously she offers me a drink and I politely decline.

“No, thank you. Please, just explain why you called me here.

“Luce, it’s been almost a year since we talked last, why now?”

She sits slowly in a red satin lounge chair, drawing a deep breath.

“It’s Matthew. He’s gone missing….”

She looks imploringly at me, using the eyes she knows will melt my heart, again. Rubbing my eyes tiredly, I flop down on the four-seater lounge opposite her.

“Luce, please, don’t use that on me. You know I’m not going to say no.”

“Oh, Kiri, does this mean—”

Oh my God, she used my pet name.

“Yes, I will help you, but please…don’t. It’s been hard enough being away for so many years. Don’t make it harder by pretending nothing happened.”

Averting her gaze she whispers softly, “I missed you, so much.”

I pull her over to my lounge and hold her tight.

“I know, love, I know. But what could I do? It’s not safe to be around me, I never should have existed at all.”

A tear trickles down her cheek and she buries her head in my arms.

“That’s not true. You know that’s not true.”

“Even so, Lucy look at me,” I push her back by the shoulders and lift her head so I can see her eyes. “Lucy, you know it’s too dangerous, we agreed—”

A loud rap on the door interrupts our reunion, and Lucy quickly resumes her composure, wiping the last few tears from her cheeks. I look at her but I can see it has been put away, for now.

The guard pops his head inside and says we have a visitor. Lucy tells the guard to hurry up and let him in. A dirty little man scuttles in and immediately begins nosing around the room as if we aren’t even there, picking up vases and ornaments, weighing them in his hands. He slips a little golden orb into his pocket before turning to Lucy and demanding a drink.

Eloquent as ever, she pours the little man a whiskey and as she hands it to him, delicately slips her hand into his pocket, retrieving the orb with relative ease.

“Charlie, please don’t touch, these aren’t mine.”

She waves the orb in his face, “Not for taking.”

Sighing tiredly she places the orb back on the dresser and grabs the little thief’s shoulder, steering him towards a chair.

Without looking at either of us she does a hasty introduction.

“Kieran, Charlie; Charlie, Kieran. Now can we please get down to why you’re here?

“My brother is missing and I need you to find him for me.”

Heaven, Hell or Hoax?

13:27 May 05 2009
Times Read: 633

I lay awake, listening to the silence and soft breathing of my lover. I wonder what heaven is like, is it like this? This tranquillity, the deep silence before the dawn. Is there even such a thing as heaven? Is there a hell? What do these things really mean to us? When we really think about them, are they just stories to keep us on the right track? Do they really mean anything?

Why should we have to die to receive these things? If hell is where we pay for the bad things we’ve done, why should we have to wait to pay for them? Don’t we pay straight away? Isn’t that what guilt and remorse are for? And what about karma? People say karma is your deeds come back to repay you, so why do we need heaven or hell?

And what if you’ve done something bad, to do a good thing? If you put aside your own greed and give all you have to do something that people see as ‘wrong’ in order to get something good for someone else, what happens then? Do you go to hell for that? If you have to steal, or kill to get something not for yourself, but for your family, giving everything, even your freedom if need be, to keep them safe. How can it be justified; does it need to be justified?

A sigh rises from the left side of the bed as my lover rolls over. I sit quietly for a minute, just pondering.

If we do something good, we are rewarded. People say its karma, but if we get rewarded straight away, why do so many people think they deserve to go to heaven? Is it because you do nothing wrong in your life? Because you live exactly to the rules, never take risks?

What about the people who have nothing, the people on the streets who steal to live? If they’re on the streets because of someone else, does it mean that that someone else goes to hell? Or is it the ones on the streets who go to hell, because they’ve stolen in order to live the life somebody else placed upon them?

My eyes close slowly, thoughts racing through my head. So many thoughts and words, not enough time. Cuddling close to my sweetheart, I drift off, holding onto my own personal angel, my little piece of heaven.

The Awakened

10:34 May 04 2009
Times Read: 656

By a temple set in darkness, we meet. Forbidden is this encounter. The heated desert wind blows strongly against my back as I lift my young lover into my arms. Kissing her passionately, I hold her tight to my aching body.

As a soldier, I am forbidden a partner, until I pass my training. They say it will distract the young trainees from their duties, though I doubt if there is one of us without a secret lover.

Gazing into her dark liquid eyes shining in the moonlight, I touch her cheek softly. As is our custom, she lowers her head submissively. The temple is for the goddess of fertility, we arranged to meet here because we are hoping to gain a child. My body may look young in years but my mind and soul are old, older even than the desert sands.

There are only two I care about, whom I have known throughout my lifetime. The soul I am duty-bound to protect, and my young lover, whose soul I know is the one of my mate from decades past. This one to which I am bound by oath shall be my son, this I know, which is the reason for bringing my soul-mate to this place. I know we shall conceive soon, and we will all be together again. One day she shall know of these things I have planned, and they both shall be re-awakened to the life as I live now, and have lived for centuries. In each of these previous times I have found both souls I have been assigned to, and so shall continue for as long as the divine see fit.

As for now, her father being a lord and me only a young soldier, still in training, we shall maintain our secrecy. At least until that time as she becomes too swollen with child to explain away as too many culinary indulgences. Whether he approves or not of our pairing, will be for the deities to decide.

If he should condemn our partnership; I, as a soldier, will defend my family to the best of my ability. If it takes my death to keep them from harm, so be it.

She stares at me from beneath dark lashes, her eyes appearing as deep black pools. They disappear as she closes her eyes when I kiss her head gently. A tiny smile, no more than the slight upward curl of the corner of her mouth, tells me she is ready.

This is her first time, but I know it only also need be her last. This dark power is so volatile and potent; it should only take one try to get it right.

Inside the temple is an array of pillows, beds, blankets and cushions. It takes less time to make a bed for ourselves than it does to get undressed.

I slip her dress down, off her shoulders and onto the floor to join my shirt. She shivers lightly as my fingers brush against her skin. Hesitantly she places a hand on my chest; she has never seen or touched the bare skin before now, I’ve always been fully clothed.

I leave my pants on, letting her get comfortable with my body; feeling her finally touch me as I’ve longed for, it feels so good. My eyes wash over her body, so pale in the dim light; I can feel my arousal at seeing her silken body so close to mine.

Gently she caresses my cheek to let me know its ok; I realize I’ve been shivering. She runs her hand slowly and firmly down my chest, all the way down between my thighs. Taking a deep shuddery breath, I lay back and close my eyes. Never has anyone done so little, to bring me so close to the edge.

Through some deep breathing and less arousing thoughts, I bring myself back under control. Warily she watches me, unsure of what to do. I smile reassuringly at her; she smiles back and pulls me over to her. She slides her hands around the back of my pants, slipping them down.

Kicking them off altogether, I kiss her deeply and lay next to her, waiting for her to adjust again. Surprisingly, she almost immediately pulls me on top of her. She knows what she wants, and as we delve deeper into the love of the most sensual creatures on this earth, she awakens. Her beast, aroused and fierce, emerges to be one with mine, as we are one in body, so we become one in spirit. Finally, the seal of our love, a single bite. The sharing of love through our life-force, the very essence of our bodies — the deep, rich blood circling through our veins.

We lay in each other’s arms, still tight together, not wanting to be apart again, fearing the dawn which will break the spell. Tonight is the beginning, the birth of our son will come, and we will be together again, until the turning of our lives here. And so shall it start again, until the worlds cease to exist.

For my Cougar, I love you.
