I woke up this morning to find one of my little crabs having a fashion show. I heard all this clunking around from the tank, and when I looked in, he was trying on a new, larger shell, a pretty iridescent green one.
That one must have been a tad too big, because when I came back, he had returned to his old shell..damn they are quick! I have never been able to actually catch one changing shells.
I passed by a bit later, and he was trying on yet another new shell, this one a striped brown one. I think he is getting ready to moult, and checking which shell he wants when it's all done. By the time I was ready for work, he had gone back to his original shell again. Now when I am coming home from work, I find him buried by the water dish.
Something might happen soon.
My two big crabs spent the evening last night facing each other, about two inches apart. Every so often they woud touch antennae, then a claw would come out and one would gingerly touch the other one. They just sat and stared at each other for most of the evening. I wonder what they saw?
The four little ones cuddled around them as close as they could get. I have to keep rescuing the little ones, as they tend to get buried under the big guys. I will just see a tip of a shell poking out from the sand and I know there's a little crab under there. I'm pretty sure they would be all right, but I worry.
It has been so hot here the last couple of days, which makes the crabs more active. Today I came home and all the empty shells were scattered around, the sand in the corners had been dug up, and the two big crabs were patrolling around the tank as though on a mission.
They are fun to watch, these little guys.
