O.o.....note to self: Giant size hermit crabs pinch really, really hard.
*OW*
Yesterday, when I bought my big crabs, I got some extra shells, because I know from experience that these guys love to change shells frequently, especially when they get moved from place to place. I bought one of the biggest shells the pet shop had, it's almost the size of a measuring cup. I put it in the tank almost as a laugh, thinking the big guys would use it for a toy.
Today...one of them changed into the new big shell. Holy cow. Now he won't fit into any of the crab huts I have, and has to settle for a warm corner with some climbing logs angled over him for cover.
He looks like a monster crab. Geez.

lol And the comments just add to this. :D
I will be bringing LOTS of CRABapples..
It's not often, well never actually, that the pet shop calls me at work. I gave them my number and told them to call me when they got some hermit crabs in, because the last couple of times I had gone in there they didn't have any crabs. I am down to 4 little guys now, and they needed some playmates.
I get to the pet shop and the owner has this huge grin on his face. "Wait till you see," he says and leads me to the hermit crab area. There, in a tank all by themselves, were two of the biggest crabs I had ever seen anywhere. I mean, monsters. Their shells were bigger than my fist, and when I picked one up, he came out of his shell to see what the hell was going on, claws waving. That boy was BIG. It was love at first sight. I bought the two big ones, and a couple smaller ones from another tank. I had a big tupperware container out in the car, so I lined that with damp paper towels and tucked the crabs in for the drive home.
I soon realized, after I got them home, that the biggest one was not going to be able to fit into the hermit crab hut I have in there, which is a hollowed out cocoanut shell. I have another hermie hut, so I took that and enlarged the doorway so the big guys could fit in and out.
They were all excited to get in the new tank, and immediately clunked all over to explore. They climbed up the logs, climbed over the hermit hut, trundled through the water dish and found the food. Amazingly, after the first round of looking round the two big guys each chose a corner, dug themselves a trench, and settled in...each big crab accompanied by two little acolyte crabs who snuggled in right next to their big brothers.
So cute! I can hardly wait till later, when they will be more active. This oughta be good.

Pictures pictures pictures!
We'll need to get together and learn you how to do pictures. I can help you with that over the telephonic instrument. :D
This is so exciting to hear you have new Hermies!!! Do you name them?
Hermiecules!!!
LOL I cant wait to hear more.
That is too cute. As I know nothing of crabs, when I read this, I was somewhat concerned about the lil' crabs you already have. Good to see that they are all getting along!
I have no camera, so no pics, sorry. And the crabs all get along very well, since in nature they live together in big groups, all sizes together. They are very nice pets to have. Nothing to be allergic to, they don't make a mess, they won't have babies, and they eat very little. Perfect!
I'm more into the cuddly type of animals but you sure have a way to bring these critters to life and actually giving them a personality. Very cool indeed.
:)

Yup. He was in the palm of my hand and was trying to see if the soft pads at the base of my fingers were food. I got quite a pinch before he let go.

My brother used to have hermit crabs. They scared the life out of me for precisely this reason. :P
