My favorite computer game of all time is Starcraft. It was released in 1998. It is the game that introduced me to the real-time strategy genre.
I could not count the number of games I played between 1998 and 2000. I would still at the computer playing Starcraft for hours upon hours... Despite it being incredibly outdated from a graphical engine standpoint, I still occasionally play the game today.
Starcraft fans waited for a sequel. Nothing happened. Blizzard put out Diablo II. Then Warcraft III. Then World of Warcraft. It seemed like Blizzard had abandoned Starcraft, despite it being the game that catapulted Blizzard into the software giant it is today. To date, over 9 million copies of Starcraft have been sold.
Finally, development of Starcraft II was announced on May 19th. A release date has not been announced, but it will most likely be over a year before the game hits the shelves.
Blizzard has posted some videos at www.Starcraft2.com. They are amazing. If you have the bandwidth, download the 650 meg demo. It's not a game demo, it's a video of the game being played that they showed at a recent convention.
It is utterly breath taking.
The cinematic trailer is good too.
