The Wedding Crashers

16:28 Jul 23 2005
Times Read: 1,469

I went to see The Wedding Crashers last night. I'm glad I did... It was about time I saw a good comedy.

The movie starts out slow. In fact, the first 20 minutes had me worried.. It was pretty dry. But once they get to the "big" wedding, it gets good.

I've never been too much of a fan of Vince Vaughn. I hated him in Made. He was okay in Dodgeball, so I've learned to tolerate him. He's really too over-the-top in the fist half of the movie. It would have been better had the director reeled him in a bit. But the morning after he is raped (don't worry, it's funny) he settles down and gives a better performance.

Owen Wilson is the real star of the film, which shouldn't surprise anyone.

A nice surprise was the performance of Rachel McAdams, who plays opposite Wilson. I hadn't recalled seeing her before. But a quick look at her filmography shows that she was in The Notebook, which I saw... But I don't recall her in it.

Overall it was a very funny movie. Christoper Walken is in it, which is always a plus. The moments of insanity between Vaughn and Gloria (Isla Fisher) give great breaks to the romantic comedy plot.

P.S. The Visine thing doesn't work anymore. That's an old bartender trick. Visine removed the ingredient that causes sickness when ingested.

War of the Worlds

21:12 Jul 18 2005
Times Read: 1,530

For several days I have debated making this entry. I am trying to refrain from negativity.

I saw War of the Worlds this past Saturday. It had been getting good reviews so I chose this film over Batman Begins, The Wedding Crashers, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Fantastic 4, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (all movies I would like to see). I should have seen something else.

I am so sick and tired of the crap that is being made into movies these days in the Action/Adventure category. It is really insulting.

So there is this alien race that buries machines deep within the earth (we presume it is several thousand or million years ago. We're never told). These aliens then come back, jump in the machines, and start killing humans.

First off, no technologically advanced race would make ships that walked on 3 legs. It's stupid. If they can fly here from millions of miles away they would have anti-gravity technology.

Second, in the beginning, the aliens just start zapping humans. Then later (for unexplained reasons), they start capturing humans and then drain them of all blood and somehow use this blood to fertilize some type of blood vine. None of this is really explained.

Third, whenever Tom Cruise is driving around, there is always a path through the debris for him to drive. An airplane even crashes into the house he is in, yet the car is untouched in the driveway.

Fourth, in the end, the aliens just die. What do they die from? Earthbound viruses. And apparently these viruses manage to disable the shields that protect the aliens vehicles too. Must be super small pox or something.

I knew I was in for a rough show when the movie opened to a monologue. Very rarely are movies with opening monologues any good.

This movie is insulting to the viewers intelligence. I felt like I did after seeing Signs. In Signs there's this super technologically advanced race, that travels across the galaxy to invade earth. They can manufacture space ships but they're not smart enough to avoid invading a planet that is 2/3 water (In Signs the aliens melt like the wicked witch of the west when doused).

In War of the Worlds, we once again have a superior race... They can build space ships and super machines. They come to invade but aren't smart enough to vaccinate themselves.

At what point as a film maker do you go from making Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., Indiana Jones, and Shindler's List to Minority Report, Men in Black II, Jurassic Park III, A.I., and this crap? I have lost all respect for Steven Spielberg.

I wanted to puke.

I do my own makeup.

I was tired and it was late last night when I wrote that last entry. I didn't want it to come off snobbish, but it did anyway.

The first part of my life was spent performing. By the age of 3 my mother had me singing and reading sheet music. By 5 I was playing the piano. Early on I was performing solo's and duets at our church, which lead to me joining the children's choir, and then shortly thereafter though still a child, I was moved up to the adult choir.

When I was 9 my mother joined a local community theater group, The Fenton Village Players. It almost ruined her marriage. My dad was vehemently opposed to her being in the group, as it took her time away from him (he was always a selfish bastard). One night she came home to packed bags. She then tried to leave, but he stopped her.

The following year when I was 10, the group was putting on The Music Man. There was a child's role in it, so she took me to audition. I would get the part, but my mother would once again only get a chorus role. As it would turn out, it would be several years before my mother got a lead.... Which was a shame. She was incredibly talented. But the competition among 30-something women is unbelievable.

There is no video for this first play I did. It would've been 1982. 2 Years later the group put on Oliver which also had a child's lead role. I auditioned for the part and got it. Over the next 6 years, I would get every part I ever auditioned for. I participated in over a dozen productions including musicals, dramas, and comedies. I worked both onstage and behind stage.

I think I was 19 when I did my last play. Being out of school (and out of my parents house) I was finding it more and more difficult to find the time to become involved in productions. I had to work a lot of hours to support myself, and all kinds of different schedules. I've always wanted to go back to the theater, but as of yet, have not had the opportunity.

I'll probably post a few more clips, as many of you have shown interest.

I am unknown. I don't say this in the snobbish no one knows or understands me sense. The simple fact is my life has entailed a series of evolutions and changes. The people that are close to me now, have only witnessed a small portion of my life. As such, their view and perspective is limited.

Here is a small sampling from 17 years ago.

I am in the midsts of, for more days than I can recall, a super-headache. I have had it for at least a month, maybe longer. I can't remember the first day it started, but it has been with me without end for several weeks.

It's there when I wake up. It's with me all day long. It is always in the exact same location.

400mg of Ibuprofin isn't having much effect anymore. If I bump it up to 600mg or 800mg I will start bleeding in the stomach.

My mother died 15 months ago. She had a 3 month long headache and then dropped dead of an aneurysm at the age of 49.
