Hippocrates (about 460 BC to 370 BC) beleived our personalities to made of certain temperaments associated with each of four humours:
Blood → Sanguine (optimistic)
Phlegm → Phlegmatic (slow, lethargic)
Black bile → Melancholic (sad, depressive)
Yellow bile → Choleric (angry, irritable)
Now I dont know bout anyone else but thats jst confusing as fuck.....Eysenck (1947) on the other hand is someone who put this into a much better and more easily understandable manner....
Eysenck beleived in FOUR Dimensions on personality that everyone fits into, we either fit into one or more of each category.....
EXTRAVERTS
Social and impulsive, like excitement, oriented toward external reality
Strong inhibitory processes
Weak excitatory processes
Strong nervous systems
INTROVERTS
Quiet and introspective, oriented toward inner reality, prefer a well-ordered life
Weak inhibitory processes
Strong excitatory processes
Weak nervous systems
NEUROTICS
Emotionally unstable, unreasonable fears, obsessional or impulsive symptoms
Psychopaths?
Unable to assess the consequences of actions and behave in a social manner
PSYCHOTICS
Insensitive to others, hostile, cruel or inhumane, severe psychopathology, conduct disorders, unusual and original ways of thinking. Psychotics – split from reality. Very creative, great thinkers but suffering from mental illness. Very intelligent, greatly creative minds that think outside the box.
I feel that if I am completly hones with myself, my personality is made up of a little of each one of these dimensions. I am a very a complex, ineffable human being, just like almot every other person - no one is alone and no one can fit into just one category.
Which dimension do you live in? Are you neurotic? Introvert? Extravert? or down right Psychotic? Let me know.
