I remember a time when my mum would just 'kiss it better'.

I miss her more than ever right now!

I was never a goody goody at school but in the final few years I was awarded with a ‘Prefect’ badge (if only they knew). With more time on my hands right now I find myself opening boxes and closets and then I came across a silly gift from last year, a friend had bought me an identical badge to the Prefect badge but with the word ‘Perfect’ written on the enamel instead, have to repeat here, ‘if only they knew’.

It’s the silly hour again. Just after 4am but this time I did switch on.

What a day to re-evaluate one’s life!

It’s all good going to bed at ‘silly O clock’ but it means you wake up at ‘silly O clock’ too. So at 3AM I’m sitting at my desk having a fag but I did resist switching the pc on as I was in that ‘can’t be bothered’ mood.

Thanks guys for your well wishes, that has cheered me some.

I haven’t been about very much as a lot has happened in the past three weeks. The journals that I have appeared in are the ones that I look to for inspiration. Whether I comment or not you all inspire me. Thank you. So what’s been happening? Well………

Two of my closest friends both lost their mothers to cancer. Whilst I was helping one friend ‘adjust’ (as that’s the only word that comes to mind) the two of us got word from another mutual best friend that his mum passed too. Alan (a Jew) was all over the place, being Jewish we had her in the ground and buried the following day, trust me it was for the best. He’s never been married and is currently single he relied on his mother for everything. She was a companion a friend, cook and cleaner. He too has joined the orphans club and I have been cooking and freezing food for him.

My second friend, Jules, is newly married, in fact the wedding was rushed so his mum would be around for the big day. To be honest we all thought it would be her who passed first as Alan’s’ mum was diagnosed and died within a month from that date. Lucky!! (Just don’t tell him that.)

Jules is a Christian and his mother was cremated. He seemed fine and I know he has the strength to pull through. Mixed emotions for him as his father was there this is someone that left his life over 30 years ago, it was emotional.

At the funeral this Joyce Grenfell poem was recited:

”If I should go before the rest of you,

Break not a flower, nor inscribe a stone,

Nor, when I’m gone, speak in a Sunday voice,

But be the usual selves

That I have known.

Weep if you must:

Parting is hell,

But life goes on

So…sing as well!”

As for me, well, I have over stretched myself to the point where I have now picked up a painful stomach bug (I won’t go into detail in case you’re eating) but it has laid me up completely.

In fact it’s back to bed for me.

I am sure you are a pillar of strength for your friends.. It's really such a sad time for you that probably sapped your strength. So, eat well and get better soon :). I love that poem by the way..reminds me of a hymn in my own Church, called" the day you gaveth Lord is ended" ..it is beautiful too :)

Here you go, I looked it up. I used to sing this in the Church choir solo :)

The day you gave us, Lord, is ended,

The darkness falls at your behest;

To you our morning hymns ascended,

Your praise shall sanctify our rest.

We thank you that your Church, unsleeping

While earth rolls onward into light,

Through all the world its watch is keeping,

And rests not now by day or night.

Across each continent and island

As dawn leads on another day,

The voice of prayer is never silent,

Nor dies the strain of praise away.

The sun that bids us rest is waking

Your friends beneath the western sky,

And hour by hour fresh lips are making

Your wondrous doings heard on high.

So be it, Lord; your throne shall never,

Like earth's proud empires, pass away:

Your kingdom stands, and grows for ever,

Till all your creations own your sway.

Well he reached out to the wrong one here. I don’t mean to be hurtful should this be genuine but as vampires go and assuming they have been dead for a hundred years or so then why haven’t they got around to learning how to use a spell checker or better still the use of plain and simple English?

She says she has only been a vampire for 5 years. Just the same I would be careful taking this one seriously. Could be a sock puppet.

I just spent a perfect weekend staying with a friend. He lives just to the east of London and backs onto the County of Essex where I currently reside. Normal journey time is about an hour. The only downer was I had to leave extra early because of a snow blizzard that fell overnight leaving about four to six inches of snow.

I was born in London but grew up in this neck of the woods and still have my best friends and some family here, it’s even marginally closer to my daughter from here.

I cleared my car of the snow and heated it up for my journey home and as I manoeuvred my car through the snow, ice and slush I began to think what the hell am I doing so far from everyone that I love.

Once I was on the main road it was mainly slush that I had to contend with. With my heater on and music playing I was snug.

When I reached the County line everything seemed gloomier. There were abandoned cars aplenty. Further along the road was a car facing the wrong way that had obviously skidded. It took me 45 minutes longer to get home, I thought it would have been even longer, lucky me.

As I approached my city the gritter trucks and snow ploughs seemed to be having a day off. I did see a mum pulling her daughter along the path on a sleigh, that made me smile. I even saw a husband and wife pushing a kid in a pram, keep in mind that the paths were all still covered in thick snow, so what was that all about?!

I literally slid into a gap outside my home. As I opened my boot to get my overnight bag out I was pelted with snowballs from the neighbours kids, I was lucky that most missed. Kids will be kids and I had no problem with that as they are good kids and on another day I would have joined in the fun.

I let myself into my house. It should have been comforting to get inside but it missed by a mile. I know I will be moving this year and will truly be going home.
