The mask had slipped away
to reveal what lay beneath
and to some that’s enough
but not for those who I have
known: they talk of what they
want and to please I let loose
my baggage, only to learn that
it isn’t enough; there’s always
their past, their present and all
that may go with it, that gets in
the way.
An though lonely is a horrible
place to be, yet mayhap, more
preferable to the pain of loss,
yet again.
Demonstrate you care, ‘an
get yourself confused like
you have been before. An
that’s the lesson of the day,
so for tomorrow I’ll dare to
walk alone again an then
I may feel less sorrow.
And they always ask if
I understand; and I always
do; yet does it help me
keep the pain at bay, ‘no.’
Now where is my mask?
I ask, seeking naught but
the peace I have known
before; before the mask
slipped away to reveal
what lay beneath, when
I’d hardly been touched
by that which I feel now.
“Now, where is my mask?”
