Games Workshop created the Warhammer 40K spin-off of their successful Warhammer Fantasy Battle line in 1987, and the game is currently in its fifth edition. Set in the grim darkness of the 40th millennium, where humanity struggles to survive in a universe populated with aliens and even darker powers seeking to consume the galaxy, it represents a future where war is the only constant.
Each player will field an army of painted miniatures and vehicles (with each individual figure representing an individual combatant) selected according to their points cost while remaining within a force organization chart. Miniatures are required to be WYSIWYG to prevent confusion during the game. The game is a tactical simulation in which the opposing forces have a series of objectives which must be achieved to claim victory on the battlefield.
Several races (many fantasy inspired) comprise available forces in Warhammer 40K:
Humans, represented by the galaxy spanning Imperium, include armies like the elite Space Marines, the leviathan Imperial Guard, the Inquisition, and the Sisters of Battle.
Eldar are essentially space-faring elves, and are a fallen race on their way to extinction. The two primary forces are the enigmatic Craftworld Eldar and the twisted Dark Eldar.
Orks are just as they sound – Orcs of legend in space. They are large, brutish, but have a knack for cobbling together vehicles and other technological marvels that make up for their lack of grace in their rugged functionality.
The Tau are a young race in the galaxy just setting out among the stars. Their optimism is matched only by their mastery of technology.
The Necrons are a mysterious robotic race dating back to the ancient life forms that dominated the galaxy in ages past.
The Powers of Chaos represent the primal energies and entities of warp space. Called daemons by many, these corrupting powers seek to consume the galaxy – and their twisted minions, including the feared Chaos Space Marines, wreak havoc wherever they are encountered.
The universe Games Workshop has created has a rich and varied history, and they occasionally run larger mega-campaigns so that the games have a flavor beyond just a simple smash and grab.
