Legend of Origin - The White Lions of Timbavati

The Meaning of "Timbavati"
The name Timbavati, as was explained to Linda Tucker, author of "The Mystery Of The White Lions" by Credo Mutwa (Africa's paramount Sanusi and carrier of Africa's Great Oral Knowledge), can be understood to sound and translate as follows; it is pronounced "Timba-vaati": Timba: to come down, and Vaati: "to the ground". A direct translation of the name Timbavati, would be; "The place of coming down". Meaning "the place where something came down", in the ancient Tsonga language. When a sangoma is sick of spirit he needs to reconnect with the Great Earth Spirit. There are very sacred places of great energy. There are places of earth energy. There are places of water energy. And then, finally, there are places of star energy. Timbavati is a place of star energy.

Fallen From The Stars� An Ancient Meteoric Event
As Credo explained to Linda; "Many years ago, long before white people came to South Africa, there was an empire which had succeeded an even greater empire before it. Ruling the people at that time, in an area in which today we find the Kruger National Park, was a female chief, a queen, called Numbi, The Ugly. Numbi, though lacking in beauty, was a very wise woman indeed. She was a woman of great spiritual power. She was a Rain Mother of her people. In fact, the Rain Queens of the Eastern Transvaal are really a continuation of an ancient matriarchal system, which goes back many hundreds of years in Southern Africa. During a time when a terrible illness had attacked Queen Numbi and her legs had swelled and her stomach had swelled. (Probably Elephantitis brought on by Malaria) She was very close to death when her people prayed to the ancestral spirits for a sign, which would help to save the queen's life. For many months the people prayed. For many months nothing happened. One day when Numbi was very close to death, night fell, the stars appeared in the sky; there was no moon, only the stars, and animals were sounding off in the bush: lions roaring, hyenas laughing and owls hooting. It was then that loud shouts were heard from many villages in the vicinity of Numbi's great royal village. People were shouting "Aaayeeeh! Yeeehhh!" There was great excitement. "Timbi-le! Timbi-le!" cried the people. It has come down! Timbi-le Vaa-ti! It has come down to the ground. An elder crawled into Numbi's hut and told her that a strange light was coming out of the skies. A star was falling to the earth. A very great star. Her servants helped her up and supported the weakened woman out of her hut and into the open. The old woman looked up and saw a great ball of light, bigger than a meeting hut, coming slowly down into the bush. It was as if in a dream. The thing came down with incredible slowness. Slowly it came down, illuminating the whole landscape, bathing it in its eerie bluish-white light. It circled down in the bush somewhere, and there was a great halo of bluish light where the thing had come down.

White Offspring - A Rare Phenomenon
It was observed many years after this event that all animals that stayed within that area where the mysterious object had settled on the ground were giving birth to snow-white offspring. It is said that at one time people saw many white leopards at Timbavati. The people saw herds of antelope; impala and elands had strange malformations involving their hooves or their horns. A pride of lions had also moved into the area where the strange star had come down from the sky and it was observed that they too started giving birth to white offspring with blue eyes. Many kings who ruled after Numbi declared Timbavati a sacred place, especially after two elephants-a bull elephant and a cow were seen which were unbelievably white in the colour of their skin. These elephants avoided the light of the sun and used to graze when the sun was from the sky or when it was either setting or before it rose. It is said that these elephants mysteriously disappeared after that, but the sacred White Lions were born again and again in that place!

To this end, R�UNION have dedicated the song "Lion Man" to the exemplary efforts and achievements of Nelson Mandela, he himself a lion-hearted individual who stood up against immense adversity and underwent extreme suffering in order to ultimately set a whole nation free. An icon to the rest of us, sending a clear message to those suppressed and dis-enfranchised people of the world, proving that by fearlessly standing up for their rights that freedom is possible even in these times, against whatever the odds may be, no matter how insurmountable these may seem at the time, and that this "freedom of spirit" can be attained with honour and integrity intact and most of all in a peaceful manner.
