An anachronism can be something that is not congruent with the time period in which it is displayed/involved. For example, a Civil War re-enactor failing to remove his digital watch before the "war" begins. That watch is an anachronism. It doesn't belong in the time period of focus.
Also, these individuals who feel at odds with the time in which they exist can themselves be anachronisms. They feel that they are in the wrong time period, therefore not "fitting".
Hmmm. While I enjoyed the article, I just wanted to add this info so that the word "anachronism" is more clearly understood.
