The Afterlife In the Egyptian religion, death is regarded as a transition from one existence to the next rather then a cessation of life. After the soul would leave the body, it would travel on a solar bark into the underworld which was inhabited by serpents with long knives, dragons who breathed fire and a serpent with five heads. When the soul made it to the realm of Duat, or the land of the gods, it would then have to pass through seven gates, and at each gate, the soul would have to recite a magic spell accurately to be able to pass through each gate, these spells were recorded down in the Book of the Dead. Once the soul had made it through all 7 gates, it would then arrive at the hall of Osiris, the place of judgment and it was in this hall that the gods would perform the “weighing of the heart” ceremony. This ceremony was to judge the soul and to see wither or not the deeds of the soul had been virtuous on earth. Anubis was the overseer of the ceremony while Thoth recorded the judgment. Forty-two gods listened to the confessions of the deceased who claimed to be innocent of crimes against the divine and human social order. "Behold, I have come to You, Bringing Justice to You, Repelling evil for you. I have not done evil against men. I have not improvished my associates. I have not acted crookedly in the Place of Justice. I have not defiled a god. I have not worsened the lot of an orphan. I have not done what the gods detest. I have not calumniated a servant to his master. I have not caused either pain or hunger. I have not brought forth tears. I have not killed. I have not commanded to kill. I have not caused anyone sorrow." The person’s heart was then placed on a scale, counterbalanced by a feather that represented Maat, the goddess of truth and justice. If the heart was equal in weight to the feather, the person was justified and achieved immortality. If not, it was devoured by the goddess Amemet. This meant that the person would not survive in the afterlife. When a soul passed the test, it became one with the god Osiris and it would then travel through the underworld on the solar bark, accompanied by the gods, to reach paradise and attain everlasting life. |
