It has been a topic of discussion throughout esoteric orders for many years. The rule that what you do unto others will come back to you three fold. I have also heard many variations of this specific rule ten fold, five fold or seven fold; the important cliché that at least something will come back to you.

So what is the message behind the law?

It is my belief that the message is that of control which is the foundation of most religions. By governing members through rules and regulations you in turn are governing thats persons freedoms.

If a member believes that if they do bad unto someone else then something bad will happen to them three fold then this fear of retribution controls that members actions.

Similarily if a member believes that they do good for someone then they will recieve good back three fold and hence again you control that members actions.

But what if the member chooses to only do good so that they may receive? Does this not contradict the whole point of the rule in the first place by actively doing something good to ONLY gain something back three fold then this action is selfish in its making and one could argue that selfish deeds are bad.

Thelema teaches that you do what you want and its only you who is responsible for the good or ill of that action with no retribution save that of your own personal spiritual growth that is yours alone.
