Interview with Nosferatu's Louis DeWray
Nosferatu are one of the elite bands in the gothic community since they formed in 1988. They have realeased 10 albums, 7 singles a dvd and have had songs on 37 different compilation albums. They have had some chart success in the UK and Germany.
These vetran Goth rockers helped keep the goth movement alive when in started falling apart in the late 80's by forming the "Gothic Society" and a periodical called "Grimoire".
"Grimoire" became a center for goth bands and fans to keep informed on the happenings in the goth scene.
Their 11th album is on the way soon and after a bit of a wait I finally got a chance to ask some questions to singer Louis DeWray....
I'd like to thank him for his time and for helping give us another interview!!!
1.) First question is when is the new album due out, and any name yet?
We're not naming the album until it's done. It'll be out this year. Fact. The new songs are ultra violent, atmospheric, rhythmic and really dark and heavy sounding. It’s the most frightening album we’re ever written.
2.) After reading the countries you've played in, I wondered why not the U.S? You were in Mexico you could have jumped up to say....Detroit, Michigan (laughing)...
Our American fans are very special. I hope it wont be long until we meet, bone to bone...lash to lash...
3.) Today there are a lot of subcultures to the "Goth" scene....gothabilly, darkwave, dark cabaret, etc...etc...To you what classifies a band as "Goth" ?
Death, Electronic Handclaps, Stripy Lederhosen and Catholicism.
4.) Nosferatu was a big part of keeping the goth movement alive with the forming of the "Gothic Society" and the newsletter "Grimoire". Are these things still in operation now 20 years later? If so where can people join/subscribe ?
The Gothic Society is still running. Although The Society has many new members each year it is almost impossible to join by application. One must simply succumb.
5.)What has been the highlight of Nosferatu's career?
Meeting President Ronald Regan at The Whitehouse and reaching an agreement over the course of a fine cheese and red wine supper to aim one of the 'Star Wars' satellites directly at Hollywood...in the event of attack etc...
okay a few questions that other members wanted to know....
6.) A little tech talk...What kind of instrument do you use? What kind of effects? What do you record through and into to get the "Nosferatu" sound?
It's just us! It's how we sound...We've always recorded to tape, apart from the recent Ramones cover 'Somebody Put Something In My Drink' which was done digitally so we could mess it around for the remix. I think that accuracy & atmosphere are very important elements in our sound. I work myself into a trance when I sing so it's important that the rest of the band is relentlessly precise so I can get a good journey through the feel of the song. I like delay timings in triplets matched with disco drums.
7.) What would you be doing if you didn't get into the music business?
Swimming
8.)If you could be anywhere in the world where would you be and why?
I'd be in bed. Because I've been asleep less in the last 10 years than you...
9.) background quiz...
favorite food: Lips
favorite drink:Water
favorite color:Blue
favorite book:BB
favorite TV show: Live Music
favorite movie:Sid And Nancy / The Doors / Heathers
favorite VAMPIRE movie: Sid And Nancy / The Doors/ Heathers
10.) Can you tell us a little about the Nosferatu book?
It's a sordid tale of dreams and betrayals, masquerades and entrails. Hopefully it'll end up reading like that.
11.) Who are Nosferatu's biggest musical and visual influences?
Louis DeWray (Voices, Guitar, Programming). I like torch singers with perfect voices. Edith Piaf, Dolly Parton, Julianne Regan, Robert Smith, Karen Carpenter. Naturally beautiful voices.
Damien (Guitars) is in love with the Ramones. On the tour bus...in the studio....texting me with Ramones song quotes etc....
Sixx (Guitars) enjoys filth and cheek with effortless skill.
Nevyn hates everything but is forever influenced by many C86 bands, Dylan, Bowie...
It would be impolite to comment upon Lady Chrys Columbine's (Classical Piano and Synthesisers) taste, it being both sharper than yours and mine and more deadly.
