I have tried to include only historical fact. Any mistakes and/ or errors are of my own making. Japan does not have what we would call a “normal” vampire. They do, however have vampire creatures. Kappas One of those creatures is the Kappa. Kappas are water creatures, and they live in ponds, rivers, lakes and the sea. They are a part of folklore, and were first widely written about some time in the eighteenth century. They are described as being a human-esque, like a small child. They have webbed feet and fingers, with green-yellow skin and a long nose and round eyes. They are also said to have a shell akin to that of a tortoise, and have a fishy smell about them. Something curious about them is that their heads are filled with water, and if spilled, the kappa will lose all of its strength. They mainly drink horse and cow blood, luring the animals to their watery homes. But they have been said to venture out and do some gruesome things, attacking people for their livers, and raping women. Bizarrely, they also seem to like eating melons and cucumbers! The Vampire Cat of Nabeshima This is a curious tale. The vampire cat stole into the royal palace one night and Prince Nabeshima’s concubine, Otoyo, was killed by the vampire cat, and the cat took on Otoyo’s form. It then slowly took the prince’s life, night by night. None of the guards were able to help because they all fell into a deep sleep whenever the cat did this. Finally, one guard was able to stay awake and stopped the cat, which fled the castle. The prince then recovered. The prince searched far and wide for this “demon”, and upon finding it, he killed it. This story has been made into a play, The Vampire Cat (1918) and a film, Hiroku Kabiyoden. (1969) |
