Purring. It was the only sound heard as the two absurdly beautiful creatures stood hand in hand. They were both so alike, yet so very not alike at all. Both had the loveliest sable hair, the color of midnight, and one would feel an aura of intense danger if they stepped too close.

The female looked like an ordinary human girl. A teenager, young and frail, with exceptional beauty and eyes of stormy grey-blue.

The male looked nothing at all like the girl. He resembled nothing of a mortal man. Instead, he was a great beast. He looked like an enormous panther and he stood almost twice the height of his lovely companion. Though, like her, he was beautiful.

The girl raised her hand to rest on the beast's face and he leaned into her touch and closed his eyes, savoring her caress as she stared adoringly and smiled at him. Dead bodies lay at their feet, torn flesh and internal organs scattered about the ground. Both creatures had blood dripping from their limbs, none belonging to them.

"Come on, Jackson," the girl cooed softly, her voice a high, lilting soprano.

"Let's go home to New Orleans, where we left my sisters. I do miss them dearly."

He purred in contentment and nodded his head as he knelt down on his front paws and allowed her to climb upon his back.

The creatures stopped just as the sun began to set. They loved the dark and all its many mysteries. The girl climbed from the great cat's back and stepped to his side. He reared his head back and roared exuberantly, and started to change.

The girl just smiled and stared at him. Within minutes, the beast was gone and in his place stood another human-like creature. He was flawless and lovely like the girl and his hair was the same color black, his eyes the same saphire blue as the giant cat-beast.

He grinned at the girl and reached out his arms to encircle her waist and pull her close. Her eyes glowed with humor and she laughed in silver windchimes as she held him just as tight.

"You look bright and lovely, my dearest," she said sweetly.

"But you also look as if you're sad."

"That's because I didn't expect there to be so few people in that little town. It was almost deserted."

It was in their nature to kill; an instinct buried deep within them. They walked the night and feasted on the ambrosia that was the living blood of the humans.

"That's all right, Jackson. We'll find more humans soon and we'll kill them just as we did the last ones. Oh, such fun we'll have as we suck the very life from them!"

Jackson grinned as his beloved mate's eyes lit up in happiness. It thrilled her to kill and he loved anything that made her happy. He watched as her pale skin glistened in the glow of the full moon and his heart pounded in a trembling rhythm as she smiled at him and fluttered her lashes in bashful adoration. His mate loved him dearly; something very rare for their kind.

Most young brides despised with all their hearts the mates that forced neverending life and eternal youth upon them.

His mate and her five sisters, Amara, Abela, Alarice, Amabelle, and Amorette, were ecstatic about their new life. Of course, his Delilah was very strange even in her mortality.

She chose then to reach up and give him a gentle kiss on the tip of his nose. She laughed as he went cross-eyed to stare at her lips as they touched him. He was so adorable to her.

Thinking back, she remembered how terrified of him she was at first.

He had grabbed her and her friends while they danced in a bayou on their first trip to New Orleans. She had feared for herself as anyone would, but she had been more afraid of what he'd do to her friends; what he'd do to her precious sisters that did not share her blood but held her heart in their very palms.

What she remembered most clearly was the terror and grief she had felt as he sank his canines deep within the throats of all of her sisters one by one. How she'd screamed at the top of her lungs when she finally got over her shock and saw them all lying on the soggy ground, still and pale.

She'd been more than happy to let him sink his fangs in her. You didn't fear death when you had nothing to live for.
