On the edge of this downtown is where the city meets the water. Over the years, times had changed and the city’s economic well being was now attributed to its financial institutions, technology corporations and the tourism industry. But decades ago, this section of town prospered and was responsible for a large part of the economic welfare of the city. Its bustling docks were busy as they serviced shipping and cargo vessels on its large and natural harbour. Adjacent to the docks and piers was the warehouse district, which was the industrial center of the merchant and supply business of its day. Because of the economic good fortune that this part of the city once enjoyed, small retail shops and hotels littered the area and they all flourished on the coattails of that booming economy. But now most of that was gone, the buildings that remained from that era were now vacant ghosts of what they once were. Their boarded up and decaying facades were simply time capsules into a time long since past. Ademia had wandered into this section of the city and it seemed that this is where she had been heading all along.
Somehow drawn here, she stood in the middle of an old and narrow street. It was so very quiet and dark. The only light that these streets received was from the moon as the streetlights hadn’t been in use for many years. Ademia surveyed the tops of the empty buildings, she was alone and there was absolutely no one else around. Somehow she just knew that, she didn’t realize how, but she just did. For the first time tonight, she was experiencing a feeling of security. Here, Ademia felt no presence of imminent danger. She continued to walk through this dark and desolate quarter, past some deserted warehouses and toward a building at the end of the street. Stopping on the corner, Ademia stood in front of an old abandoned hotel. Its three story stone façade supported arched windows with ledges below, complete with pilasters and finely detailed ornamentation. It had long since been boarded up and now was crumbling. Wandering all evening, without any place to go, this old hotel looked as good as any to become her final destination for the evening. It could no longer provide the finer accommodations; it had no electricity, heat, running water or indoor plumbing, but at the moment, Ademia could not have cared less. After the night that she'd had, it would provide the things that she needed the most, solitude, shelter and a place to rest. Besides, Ademia was drawn to this hotel and what lied within it. Going inside was not an option, she had no idea that she was without a choice.
