This was real; it wasn’t a scene on television or something from a horror movie. Actually watching Cornelius’ fangs pierce the man’s skin, hearing them tear through his flesh, seeing Cornelius swallowing his blood and then looking at her with a mouth wet with blood as it dripped from his chin utterly sickened her.
“Cornelius, I can’t.”
“But this is why we are here…what we came for.” he said holding up the man and waiting for her. “You must, you need to feed.”
“I’m sorry Cornelius, I really can’t do it.” Rita said. Cornelius stood there motionless for a moment and he could see by the terrified look on Rita’s face that she was serious. She was not ready and Cornelius was more than disappointed. All of this, this entire evening was orchestrated for her. But at the moment, Cornelius decided to redirect his attention and focus on a more important matter at hand; a man lying in his arms dying from a vampire attack. If this man were left unattended and subsequently died, Cornelius would bring another vampire into being. To him, that was out of the question and was not an option. He had no intention of creating another ever again, especially by mistake. There was absolutely no choice in the matter over what he now had to do. With Rita unwilling or unable to feed upon this man and finish him, Cornelius would have to do it and quickly. It was something that he’d had to do a thousand times before. With no time to waste, Cornelius turned away from Rita and once again buried his face into the man’s neck. This time he had every intention of feeding from this man until he was dead. Rita stood behind quietly and watched for what seemed to be an eternity. She could hear the stranger’s heart beating slower and slower, until it finally stopped. Cornelius had finished; this poor man was dead and he would never be coming back.

Later that evening, in the cellar of an old abandoned house, Cornelius awoke on an old brass bed. Lying there for a moment, he blankly stared up into the darkness. Cornelius unfolded his arms and sat on the edge of the bed. As he sat there, he recognized a familiar feeling. He could feel the anxiety, like every cell in his body was vibrating. Only this vibration was erratic and agitating, if it were left unchecked, in time it would drive him to rage and eventually madness. Going against everything Cornelius knew was right and completely ignoring his perception of morality, he had to make a kill. Tonight Cornelius had to take the life of another unsuspecting human and feed on their blood. To his disappointment, he had absolutely no choice. He wished that he had.
