"I first had the idea for this book back in the summer of 2004. I wanted to write a "realistic" story about a vampire as he might live today in the 21st century, while possessing a very unique and tangible backstory. The title is pronounced vawm-peer, the old world European way to say it. The 2000 is not a year, it represents the 21st century. And that was the idea, something old and traditional meets something new and contemporary, here and now. It is a brief look into a vampire's life, this story is modern, realistic, set in a major American metropolis, there are no bats or clouds of mist, the vampire has a unique origin, the bad guy is bad and people die. Early on, the original title of the book was "You Wouldn't Believe Me If I Told You" and that was the initial premise of how vampires would blend in and "live" amongst us unknowingly everyday. In the short time that the story follows Cornelius, the main character, we see his transformation from a lonely killer into a creature that once again appreciates life. This long awaited journey is forced upon him by the re-emergence of his nemesis of over one hundred and forty years, also his very serendipitous meeting of the woman who would change his life. VAMPYRE 2000: Life to the Lifeless isn't a story about young, model type vampires that walk in the daylight and experience soap opera lives. This story is about something completely different. I have been telling people that this is a new vampire story, but actually it isn't. It's more of a return to the characteristics that we imagine when we think about vampires. Within this story is drama, action, suspense and romance, I very much enjoyed getting it out of my head and onto the paper. I honestly believe that this is a very good story. One that is well thought out and well written. I also think you will enjoy it."

As he strode effortlessly through the occupants of these streets he thought back to Tony’s warning. By no means was this the first time that townspeople or officers of the law had suspected him for wrongdoings. As we know, Cornelius was not an ordinary man. He was no longer a man at all. There wasn’t much that the townspeople or officers of the law could do to him if they didn’t understand exactly what he was. He was fast enough to outrun them, strong enough to break their shackles, indestructible enough to withstand their bullets and smart enough to outwit them. Over the years Cornelius had done all of these things at one time or another. He regretted the few times when the situation became intense and his survival instincts took over. In those cases people, sadly, just had to die.

Ademia awoke from her sleep tonight unlike any other. She wasn’t able to get a grasp on her thoughts and she was very groggy and disconnected. As she lay there, she struggled to regain her consciousness; it was as if she had been drugged. Each time she approached coherence, she drifted back again into an emptiness that seemed vastly infinite and without boundaries. Drifting aimlessly through the abyss, Ademia’s mind felt separated from her body, to her, her limbs seemed like they were bags of sand. She was afraid and becoming increasingly terrified, like a nightmare in which she kept dying again and again from which she could not awake. Experiencing an intense pounding from within, she fought and struggled to grab hold of a stream of consciousness and ride it out of this nightmare. Finally, a spark electrified her body, her muscles spasmed, she clinched her jaw and Ademia’s eyes went wide open.

He had become one of the dominant beings of this earth and was in control over his immediate environment. Immunity from the effects of the weather and the seasons, dominance and control over men and women, hyper sensitivity that allowed him to be more comfortable at night than any other living creature, incredible speed and the strength of several men, along with the immortality that allowed him to walk the earth throughout the years and amass a knowledge no ordinary man could dream of. The same immortality that would let him relive his horrible beginnings again and again, to know that everyone he had ever loved was now long dead and buried in the earth and to witness the rise and fall of the species he once belonged to, mankind.

Although it was a memory he relived from time to time, it was one he tried to forget. Cornelius buried that origin, of his transformation from a once alive and happy young man into a cursed immortal creature of the undead, deep within his psyche. It was quite a sobering reminder that left his head heavy with emotion; anger, sorrow, disgust, shame and regret. And yet within all of those powerful emotions, there was something more, a sense of power, pride, wisdom and superiority. He was no longer a man, but much, much more and something less, all at the same time.
