FML part deux...

So I went to the foot doc on Saturday. He was super nice, which I am glad for. I told him the whole scenario like I mentioned in the previous journal entry on this. I told him I thought it was more than a sprain and had asked the ER to do a MRI and what not. He asked me if I minded if he ran an x-ray, even though I had already been x-rayed 2 times prior. I told him to go for it. He takes me to this old x-ray machine he has, joking about its age to me and tells me he is going to zoom in on the film a little. Two pictures. Back to the room and he puts them up on the holder and turns the back light on. Plain as fucking day, I have a spiral fracture of the 5th metatarsal. Thank goodness it is straight across the bone and no displacement instead of on the diagonal. How the hospital did not see that a few days prior on their fancy x-ray machine is beyond me. My options, cast or boot. I took the boot of course. So, yesterday I had to break the news to my instructors and figure out my options since clinicals start in 3 weeks. My next appointment is the 22nd of October, which is 4 weeks. So as it stands right now, if I am healed enough to get released on the 22nd from the Dr. I can make up my lost days during one of my breaks. If he tells me another 4-6 weeks. I am done, and will have to drop. Not sure what to think about all of this and do not know what my next move is in this fucked up mess.

FML!

Last Sunday my right foot started hurting in the area of the cuboid bone, which is right below your pinky and next toe. As the week went on it started to get some swelling. So I got in to see my doc and he ran an x-ray on it and nothing showed. So he told me to wear a hard soled shoe and see what happened over the next week or so. So yesterday as class was getting over, I crouched down and was putting my camera in my back-pack and something snapped in my foot and I fell over onto my ass. i got up and hobbled to my car, drove home and iced and elevated it for 2 hours. It was hurting bad. I ended up going to the ER and spent 3 hours there. All they did was run more x-ray and it showed nothing and gave me some prescription ibuprofen and a boot. I ended up signing up for lab assist for this morning and then had my own lab and so I was on it a lot today, although I did ice and elevate it a couple times. It is nore swollen and I got in for an appointment with a foot doc on Saturday morn. I hope I can get some answers from him as I start my clinical rotation in a few weeks and this is something that can fuck me! And possibly make me have to drop out of the program. Needless to say I am not a happy person with that thought and other things going on personally that add to the stress of it all.... Will report back on the prognosis.

Fun day at school!

I made it through the instrument practical today. I feel pretty confident that I did well. Tomorrow is the written exam portion of the section. I am not looking forward to that. On an up note, I only have class 3 days instead of 4. But I did volunteer to lab assist in the morning on Wed. before my lab time, so that will make for a looooong day.

School~Week 4

The program has proven to be pretty intense so far as I figured it would be. I am in class 4 days a week and have a quiz or an exam every day. This week we are having our first dose of instruments. Over 100 to learn this week to be tested on Monday. We will have 20 seconds per. The hard part about it is, we really have not been exposed to and worked with these instruments and they ALL have fucked up names! So you have to make shit up to help you remember them. And on the test you have to put the details like curved or straight, right angle, types, like self retaining retractor or hand held retractor, clamps, dissecting...etc.... I will be spend my next 2 off days in lab for extra time in. *crosses fingers*

Loooong ass day!

Yesterday I shadowed at the hospital in the OR from 7-1. I already knew from my neighbor that it was a jam packed day for surgeries, which is unusual for Fridays. The first one was an inguinal hernia. This puppy was the size of 2 marshmallows! Holy shit! Then I got to watch a C-section. Very cool to see. The 3rd procedure was a D & C with hysteroscopy. You got to see the scope inside and what it saw. The last one was a bi-lateral hernia on an 8 year old. :( The techs that were working were awesome and I learned a lot! We start instruments this week and I feel I am ahead of the game now. Then finally had a celebratory beer with 2 other girls who did the shadow, after for getting in the program even though we are going on our 4th week now. Then out to Chicago for a concert and got to sleep about 4 am and up at 7am! Why am I still up??
