Alan got into his truck and sighed, he didn’t like this place because the cashier was always so rude. He wouldn’t stop there but they were the only place that carried his favorite drink. He pulled out of the parking lot and had to turn on his wipers, the weather wouldn’t make up its mind whether it wanted to be sunny or rain. He was a couple blocks along when the rain stopped again. He figured it wouldn’t be long before it started up again. He looked over and couldn’t believe his eyes… “Now what on earth is that girl doing?” He slowed down and rolled down the window, “What are you doing?” She shrugged, what the hell? “Do you want a ride?” Why is she just shrugging at me? “Look, with the rain it’s a little cold for you to be walking out here and it’s a while before you get anywhere, why don’t you just get in?” He had all but stopped now, she stopped and looked at him for a moment. She was wearing her hair so that he couldn’t really see her face.
“Alright.” She hesitated before walking over and getting in, “Thanks.”
Wow her voice is familiar. “So where are you headin’?” Damn that’s frustrating, I wish she’d stop just shrugging at me.
“I’m not really sure, I was out for a walk but then I just didn’t stop.”
Why does she sound so familiar? “Well, I’m on my way to get a bite to eat, do you wanna join me? It will help warm you up and I could use the company.”
She looked nervous and shrugged again, “Um, well, ok”
She brushed the hair off of the left side of her face and he realized why she was being so avoidant. It felt like his heart stopped for a moment. Shit, I didn’t realize it was her. Why didn’t I recognize her? “So how’ve you been?” He realized his voice sounded a little bitter but he couldn’t help it.
She looked over at him with a half grin and biting her lip. “I don’t know, ok I guess.” She looked back away from him and shrugged. She was still biting her lip.
Why does she have to do that? “So first you don’t know and now you only say ok, which is it? You either know or you don’t and if you do than why only ok?”
She cast a sideways glance at him and grinned ruefully. “So nothing I say is going to be right enough to avoid your snide sarcasm? I guess I should have expected it once you recognized me. You can let me out up here if you want.” She pointed to the corner.
Humph “Like hell, you said you would go get some food with me and that’s what we’re going to do. If I’m a little bitchy just put up with it, it’ll pass. Besides, you’re going to catch a cold if you stay out in this and it’s not like I hate you. I’m just … I dunno.”
She bit her lip again and sighed. “True say, I know.”
I should tell people that this is a combination of my own and stuff from someone else. They fit together though and I was inspired to write this so I did.
As I am walking down the road I come across a man. I see him raise a dagger as though to plunge it into his heart. I shout "STOP!" He does and then turns to look at me. "Do not kill yourself sir. Why do you try to die?"
He looks at me with nothing buy curiosity on his face. "Why not?"
"What do you mean?"
"You asked me why I am trying to die and I ask you why not? You see, I don't have a real reason. I don't have any reason not to either so I chose death. If you can think of a reason then I will hear it."
I could not quite understand why no reason not to die would make a man kill himself. "I can come up with no reasonable objections. Still, instead why don't come along with me. Be my companion for a time."
The man stood there pondering it for a moment. "Ok, I will do that."
"So you will not end your life?"
"No, not just yet anyway. You have provided me with a reason to live, if only a temporary one."
"So you came from beyond the border?" She looks at me with inquiring eyes and liifts a cigarette to her ruby lips. She hesitates. "I imagine it must be nice beyond." She lights it and takes an indulgent drag.
I look at her with curiosity. "Why would you say that?"
She inhales again. "Because I've never been there, nobody here has in fact." She leans back in her chair languidly. "This place is like a vaccum, nothing ever leaves. Nothing good has ever come in either. I have to wonder whether you're good. So what brings you here?" She sits up a little again.
"You really don't like it here do you? Why don't you leave?"
She grins at me without humor, it was a surprisingly seductive look. "I told you, nothing leaves. This place sucks things in and they end up stuck here one way or another."
He lied there slowly fading. With each breath a memory passed through his mind. He saw it all so clearly, what lead him here. He had been foolish. A voice suddenly intruded.
"You know, I think I enjoyed her the most. She stayed alive a long time in my dungeons, she endured more than I would have thought. Everytime I offered to end it for her she would say, 'Do what you will. He will come for me.' You never did though did you? You didn't care enough to save her."
Her face flooded his mind. There was the first time they met. Next was when she decided they should go there own ways. That was painful, it had come shortly after he had told her he loved her and then told her the truth. He didn't see her again until the day before she disappeared, she had been crying and wouldn't tell him why. Finally, she had kissed him and left.
"No," he thought to himself. "It can't be, she's not dead." He could hear them laughing as they walked away. Those bastards, he had to make them pay. One last memory, her smile. A cold fury began spreading through him. He opened his eyes onto the world once more. "This is it" he thought. "You'll regret meeting me!" He shouted as he stood up. He looked at their faces with some satisfaction as they displayed first surprise and then mild fear. He drew to his full height and said, "Our fight isn't finished yet!"
They hesitated a moment, how can this be? They had delivered several fatal blows to him hadn't they? Fear began to rise in both of them, no mortal could have survived. Then he must not be mortal, that would be impossible though. There was nothing else to do, they would summon their weapons. Even he wouldn't stand a chance then.
"Lilith, it is time" A short serrated scithe materialized in his hand.
"Titan, come to me." With those words a gigantic war hammer appeared in the other man's hands. "Now we'll finish it!" He mustered all the power he could and swung Titan hitting the earth. Shards of the ground flew at him and spikes came up beneath him. Simultaneously the other man swung Lilith and the air itself became a weapon striking at him with ice and fire. They lost sight of him in their combined attacks so they stopped to let it all settle. They looked with satisfaction, where he had been was pure destruction and he was gone.
"What a fool, he could never have defeated us. We obliterated him!."
"I would not be so sure"
The man carrying Lilith jumped and turned just in time to see him rise up out of his shadow and strike. With one move his head was severed.
The man carrying Titan looked at him in terror. "You! No, that's not possible! You're dead, I saw you die!"
"Just as you thought that I must surely be a morta?"
The man turned to run but there he was, standing in his shadow. He swiped at Titan and it shattered. He then drew a small dagger and placed it in the man's hand. "I am going to let you live but only because I'm sure your master will do the job for me and I need someone to see him. Go, go to your master and tell him what you've seen, tell him I, DurAdan, have returned!
