Cruelty to kids at the hands of kids......

11:44 Aug 22 2008
Times Read: 696

Kids can be the cruelest people in the world and yesterday for the first time I witnessed a small taster of this at the expense of my 4 year old son Noah. Let me set the scene, Noah doesn’t have the appearance of an average 4 year old kid, he has long curly hair, he loves skinny jeans, his favorite color is black, he likes vampires and bats and has an obsession with batman and most things dark. It’s evident from his appearance that he’s not a conventional child and he’s comfortable and likes his looks and appearance.

Anyway, whilst leaving the park yesterday Noah cycled past two other kids who were much older than him aged about 13 or 14. Unbeknownst to Noah, as soon as he had past them, they both began laughing and talking loudly about his hair, responding and adhering to the stereotypical view that long hair is associated with girls and finding this comical in the process.

Although Noah was oblivious to this, I wasn’t and as I approached them I could feel by blood boil and I kept saying to myself “Maria, ignore it, they’re kids and kids are cruel to each other anyway”. However as I leveled with them my innate desire to defend Noah took over and with a smile I said “What’s so funny kids”. At this they stopped laughing and I continued with “Surly your not laughing at his hair with hair like yours?” whilst looking at the doll with the hideous Bo Derek braids in her hair. There was silence as the two of them looked at each other stunned.

I walked away knowing I should have ignored this and knowing that as a mature woman I had lowered myself to their level and mentality. But you know what? It felt good and at that point I really didn’t give a shit because I love Noah with my whole heart and I will protect him physically or mentally regardless of the consequences. I know that I can’t always defend or protect him from growing up or situations that will arise throughout his life, and its possible that some day an adult will also put him in his place for mocking others younger and less able to defend themselves also and good for them if they do, but while he is still so young god help any kid I catch trying to erode his self-esteem because to me Noah's self-esteem is priceless and I will always mean business were thats concerned ;P

There is nothing at all wrong with what you said, and any mother would have done the same. To be honest, i'm amazed you managed to stay so calm! Noah looks like an adorable kid, and with a mother like you backing him he's sure to grow up confident and well-adjusted :-D

I had to censor what I had initially wanted to say and I was proud of myself for holding back and resorting to what I actually said as I have a tongue that could cut through steel .. lmao

I kinda felt sorry for the kid I singled out, but there was an indirect message for both of them as a result of the incident ..... I just hope they had the intelligence to recognize it. Thanks for your support your obviously a mother also :)

Boys will be boys...as they say, but sometimes when they are confronted about their actions, as you did, they actually learn from the experience. I hope they picked up on it.

What you did was nothing more than any loving mother would do. Maledicta's right. Your son will grow up to be self confident and caring because of how you raise him. There is never anything wrong with that.

As you know my friend our children are priceless and I think you were commendable and can only echo what others have said here in your journal.

Rain rain go to Spain ..... but not until I come back from Barcelona ;P

I love Ireland I truly do, it’s green and lush and looks stunning in photographs but thank your lucky stars you’re only looking at in photographs. As with anything green and lush there is always a price to pay and the price we pay is rain, copious amounts of endless rain rendering us unable to go outdoors.

This is the second consecutive summer running were it has rained almost everyday. Will I ever be able to play in the garden while my son is still young or will we continue to stay indoors and drive each other insane? Roll on Saturday for some factor 8 ;)

I need to become a more creative parent I think …..

Try paints, crafts, building blanket tent cities where picnics are held and all giants (usually moms) have to be friendly and love crawling in and around the cities.

Oh yeah..the giants MUST be willing to cook and/or have yummy snacks available and laughter is a definate plus.

We were complaining about getting no rain all summer..now the last 4 days have been solid rain. It's either keep the kids busy...or become a monster..it's easier to keep them busy..lol

Good luck.

Is it too cold for playing in the rain? I used to love running around, playing tag, and hide and seek all while the rain poured down.
