Senate Reduced to "Your Mom" Jokes
Quote of the day
You know a political argument is getting good when senators start dropping "your mom" jokes. That's what seemed to happen today during a brief exchange on healthcare between Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., and Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz. Said Stabenow, "And I don't think you can go forward and allow 60 percent of the insurance companies not to provide basic maternity care." Then Kyl took the floor, and said, "Well, first of all, I don't need maternity care. So requiring that to be in my insurance policy is something that I don't need, and will make the policy more expensive."
At that point, Stabenow cuts back in and says, "If I could just object once with my colleague, I think your mom probably did."
Even though Stabenow is actually making a substantive point, and not really a joke about his mother, faint "ooooh"-ing can be heard in the background. Kyl shoots back weakly, "Over 60 years ago my mom did." ~Gabriel Winant of Salon.com
"How sadly fragile is the philosophy of those who fear that their lifetime of parenting could be undone by a 10-minute speech on the importance of staying in school and contributing to the nation."

I've been thinking about that... if it were someone's favorite celebrity, possibly a Spiderman fanatic meeting Tobey MaGuire- I betcha the parent wouldn't mind him kneeling down to their kid saying, "Stay in school, and you can make all your dreams come true." I bet they would be proud and impressed, and they wouldn't want to sock him for trying to take their job as parent.
Presidents have always addressed children. And today with all the crap being spewed, I'm sure it won't hurt at all to hear words that can put them at ease. Christopher is really excited to hear the address. He says, "The President is talking to all the kids, and this is a special event."
To someone who hates a politician, there is no good they can do. Hell... even Michelle caught shit for wearing shorts in the heat.
I think the President talking to the kids is a great idea, it helps inspire them to contribute and to learn.
Did I vote for the guy? Nope I didn't. Does that make a difference? Nope not at all.
If it wasn't him it could well have been any one of the other 200 + presidential candidate who won and would be addressing the children. Would I have an issue with that? Nope I would still think its a good idea.
I'm really showing my age here but...
When I was 13 The President came to our town and gave a speach to a group of kids. I was the reciepient of a Presidential Award for environmental activities so I was invited to the speach and actually got to meet, shake hands with and be presented the award from the President.
My parents were not in any way what you would consider "politically active". Sure they voted and all, we didn't talk politics in the house much. That being said, I know for a fact that my parents despised everything this particular President said, did and believed in. I must say that I was repulsed equally by this Man and his policies.
What did my parents say when I got the invitation? Excellent Keith, We are very proud of you...Remember the old saying "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all". They were not concerned that what this man might say would "turn" me away from my own beliefs. They didn't want to "protect me" from what he had to say.
I sitill have the framed certificate from Richard M. Nixon.
These people who feel they need to isolate their kids from whatever President Obama has to say to them are doing ther children a great disservice.
Mickey Mouse Monopoly- Racism, sexism, corporate control. Some people cannot see the harm in Disney, but I have to wonder if they really are watching. If anyone is interested in seeing another perspective this film really shows a more in depth view of the hazards of Disney.

The corruption in Washington is staggering. The final days of the Roman Empire come to mind.
