Enter the dark, mystical, magical world of The House of Night: A place where young teenagers or “fledglings” are sent to once they have been “marked”. The HON is a high school of sorts; it is a place where fledglings can go to study and learn about the transition to ultimately become a vampire. However, not all of those who are “marked” are guaranteed to go through the transition and become a vampire; another outcome is inevitably death (a result of a body rejecting the change).



Marked introduces, Zoey Redbird who seems to be your average sixteen year old girl with high school/football player sweetheart, friends & family who plans to move on to college and pursue a normal life. That is until one day, when she is “marked”. Zoey is thus forced to leave everything and everyone she knows and loves in order to move into the HON. As the story evolves we also learn that Zoey is not the typical fledgling, the Goddess Nyx has given her the gift to control the five elements which is a sign that she will one day become a powerful High Priestess. Marked, covers Zoey’s journey as she enters a new school where she is the new kid on the block. We witness her struggle to acclimate to her new surroundings as well as to the changes taking place within her as she begins her transition to becoming a vampire and a High Priestess. We also see her success at building new friendships which include finding a new love interest. However, not all is as it seems at the HON and Zoey unwittingly attracts unwanted enemies, The Dark Daughters. The book reaches its climax with Zoey fighting a life/death battle against an evil awaked by the leader of the Dark Daughters (Aphrodite) that will determine Zoey’s place at the HON.



We really enjoyed this first installment of the House of Night series. The plot is rich and filled with intrigue and drama all delivered in a light & fun voice; after all, Zoey is a teenager. The introduction and development of great supporting characters add great entertainment to this contemporary story about new-age vampires and should satisfy the most avid paranormal readers. You can’t help but fall in love with this young yet strong-willed heroine as she maneuvers through the intricate labyrinth of the House of Night. If you liked the Twilight Saga series and Vampire Diaries you are certain to get “hooked” on this series right of the bat.
