A childhood memory......

Just got a slide of the NYSW 252 in the mail today that has brought back some childhood memories. Back in the 1970's my father and I would go down to Ridgefield Park, some refer to the location as Little Ferry as that was the name of the station that was once there even though Little Ferry was across the Hackensack River. Back in those days, the employees of the NYSW otherwise known as the Susquehanna would park their cars at the old station site and a locomotive, usually the NYSW 252 would come across the Overpack Creek drawbridge to bring the employees down to the yard.



From the Hauser Collection: The first photo is of the NYSW 252 after it was steam cleaned and revealed its original maroon and grey paint in order to prep it to get a special Bicentennial paint job. Its seen in Ridgefield Park, NJ 3/18/1976.

Also from the Hauser Collection: The second photo is of the NYSW 252 in its special Bicentennial paint scheme in Little Ferry Yard. The graphics were stickers purchased from a local hardware store. Unfortunately, bored NYSW crews would peel off the stars that were under that under the cab windows surrounding the locomotive number. The stars were replaced a number of times. Finally management gave up and painted a white box around the number.

Not sure who I got this slide from. The caption says "Movie Special" NYSW 252 Maywood, NJ 4/21/1982. I assume this is a westbound and early in the DO era as the all door car is lettered for the CACV and the double track is still in place.

Its so cool to have photos of a locomotive I saw so many times as a youngster. Unfortunately, the NYSW 252 was traded in to GE in 1988 and scrapped that same year.

A tad slow, railroad wise. Had a major lull after a five train rush. Was still tolerable as far as temperatures were concerned and at least the rain held off until after dark.

Here I sit west of Harrisburg in a tiny hamlet known as Leshville along the Juniata River around Newport, Pa. The sun is shining, it's 61 degrees in the middle of February, and trains are running, 15 caught so far!! What more could a rail enthusiast ask for??

Looking up to my father and what I wanted to do for a living growing up.

Although my father and I do not have a "mushy" relationship and although we have had our ups and downs over the years. I have always looked up to my father. I have always admired him.



My fathers family was certainly NOT close. My grandfather drank heavily and had a nasty temper when drunk. I gather my father didnt have close relationship with his mother either. He was the eldest of three children and apparently my aunt Mary, the baby of the family got all the attention.



Needless to say, my father dropped out of high school and at the age of 17, my father enlisted in the navy just to get out of the house. Well, the navy and my father did not get along and my father was discharged before he could graduate out of Great Lakes boot camp.



My father then spent a number of years working as a mechanic in Paterson's "Gasoline Alley". He did OK but when my Aunt Mary married my Uncle Sam, his father Sam Senior got my father onto the Erie Lackawanna railroad. It was October of '67 starting on the track surfacing gangs. He would work from March to December, being furloughed from December to March, but my father stuck with it. Some time before or after I was born, he bid into the working equipment department as a mechanic.



Most days saw him working in the Getty Ave, Paterson yards working on company trucks and other equipment. I remember my father coming home and taking a nap every afternoon. I had to be very quiet and as a result, I never got the noisy toys my cousins would get. There was a reason for this. My father was subject to call at ANY time to run the lights if there was a wreck or if there was a snowstorm so that other crews could do their jobs.



Finally in late 1974 my father bid into the scale department as a scale inspector where he inspected and tested railroad scales and this would be his job until retirement. He absolutely LOVED his job and was proud of what he did. Being a lifelong rail enthusiast didnt hurt either. It was a good job for being on the railroad. He was home most nights, unlike guys in T&E (Train and Engine Service) who basically live out of the hotel half the time. He left for work at 6am and was home by 3pm. His job allowed him to take his camera with him and of course he rail fanned as much as his job permitted. As a result his slide collection is one of the best I have seen covering so much territory and over the course of so many years. As the years went by, his territory grew as the railroad cut back on the number of employees and scales. By the 90's his territory stretched from Philadelphia north into Canada and as far west as Rochester, NY. He covered all of NJ, NY, and New England. Two of his most favorite customers were the Massachusetts Central RR and the Vermont Railway. He always looked forward to testing their scales.



In 1999, His employer, Conrail was split by Norfolk Southern and CSX. He was supposed to go to CSX, but CSX did not wish to have a scale department, theirs had been outsourced to a wholly owned company called "Rail Scale". Last minute negotiations got him onto Norfolk Southern. His territory still covered New Jersey but now covered Eastern PA and the Delmarva Peninsula. He still liked the job, but it wasnt the same. He missed a lot of the people he worked with in NY and New England. He retired in 2000 after suffering a MS attack and was offered a buyout. NS wanted to contract out most of his territory to the federal government. In order to stay, he would have had to move to Alabama to which my father told his boss that he would take the buy out as his feet did not like southern soil. So after 34 years working for the Erie Lackawanna, then Conrail and then finally Norfolk Southern, he packed it in.



A year or so later, Railroad Retirement changed their rules allowing him to take his Railroad Retirement benefits earlier than he otherwise would. (He was living solely off his NS pension at the time) So now as a retiree he has his pension and Railroad Retirement and although things are tight, he is making it. Not bad for a high school dropout. I am very proud of him and I always looked up to him. Whenever anyone asked me what I wanted to do for a living, "working for the railroad" was my response. I aways wanted to follow in dads footsteps and be a scale inspector too, but it wasnt to be. His job was being phased out.



I did give T&E a go back in 1998 and if it weren't for an overtime hound of a conductor, I would have made it. This guy hoping to get rid of as many of the trainees that were working at the time, dimed me and another brakeman trainee out to management. I failed the "functional capacity" test. My failings, I could not ride the side of a freight car long enough. Something I WAS working on correcting by trying to improve my upper body strength. While I was disappointed in not succeeding as a railroader, I am still grateful that I was able to do the job for a short period and I do get more respect from railroaders then many rail enthusiasts because I actually did the job and have an appreciation for what they go through.



I will never forget the first conductor I worked with. Mr Bill McCarthy. He shocked the hell outta me. He came in dressed well and looked like a kindly grandfather. One that could never say a bad word and that would be a good influence on me. Then he changed into his work clothes and it was like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The yard master, nicknamed "The Prince of Darkness" had wanted us to make some extra moves after we did our normal work. I could not believe when Mr McCarthy CHEWED the yard master out at length. In the most profane manner, he told him that nothing was going to interfere with his two hour quit, what he could go do with himself and where he could go. So on the locomotive we were. McCarthy and the engineer were talking about people on the railroad, mostly management in a negative way, when the name Joe Garafolo came up. He was the district superintendent. Mr McCarthy obviously HATED Garafolo and he wove a tapestry of profanity that I swear is still hanging over the New Jersey Meadows!!! He used every curse word in the book and I think he INVENTED a few. Needless to say, he was the first "shot out" person I met on the railroad and being that my friends are railroaders. I have certainly been told stories of the many shot out people on the railroad and have even met a few, like "Red" Corsun who says he hopes that Garafolo's house burns down with him in it. Then there was an engineer who would show up to work in his wife's pink bunny slippers. Then there was the engineer who had the nickname "The Eliminator". His off work pastime was playing poker. As a result, he was always tired and falling asleep asking his conductor if he wanted to run the train. He got caught using company lodging at his home terminal and almost got fired.



Another was Jeff Seidel. I only got to meet him once as he died from Lou Gehrigs disease. He was a big influence on a friend of mine as he now wears plaid shirts on the job, smokes stogies and has a big interest in railroad signals.



While I only worked for the railroad a short time, I am still proud of it. I still love the railroad and trains. I also have an interest in scale test cars as thats what my father worked on. Here are some photos of them:

Valentines Day...A rant.

Hearts and roses and kisses galore...

What the hell is all that shit for?

People get mushy and start acting queer

It is definatley the most annoying day of the year

This day needs to get the hell over with and pass

Before i shove a dozen roses up Cupid's ass

I'll spend the day so drunk I can't speak

And wear all black for the rest of the week

Guys act all sweet, but it soon will fade

For all they are doing is trying to get laid

The arrow Cupid shot at me must not have hit

Because I think love is a crock of shit

So heres my story...what else can I say?

Love bites my ass...Fuck Valentines Day!



I normally am not envious when people are happy. I am all for people having relationships and having someone special in their lives, but Valentines Day is the exception. Its like everyone who has a significant other has to rub just how happy they are and their saccharin sweet smooching into everyone elses face. Its everywhere and you cant escape it, from the stupid heart candies at the convenience store to the roses being sold everywhere, to all the adds on TV and radio. Its like a giant fuck you to all of us single people out there. All this for a holiday that was created by the card and gift industry. Its nothing but a huge commercialized way to get people to spend their hard earned money on stupid crap every 14th of February. Why are people showing their love for their significant other on only one day? Should it not be every day? Do we really need the stupid heart shaped chocolates, the cards and all the other gifts to prove our love to someone? I would think a persons actions and doing things for a significant other on a daily basis is a better way to show their love rather than the commercialized BS.

I have to agree with you on your point..I find myself alone this year. But I have always..believed that if you truely love someone that you need to show it every day by being there for them ..by your actions and that doesn't have to involve any money..





 

DANGEROUS COLD.

For those of us in the northeastern United States; unless you have been living under a rock, you know its going to get dangerously cold out there. Be safe if you have to venture out. Make sure you get the pets indoors and check on the elderly. Also, if you have a crawl space like I do with exposed pipes, make sure you run your faucets. Let them run just a trickle, especially the hot water so the pipes don't freeze. Better to waste water than having to repair or replace a busted pipe. Plumbers will be in high demand and they will be demanding big $$$ for repairs!!

A link to an article about one of my hobbies, that unfortunately I have not been able to do for some time, model railroading. It seems that young people just aren't getting into the hobby anymore. I bet a lot of kids have the same problem I do. They live with their mother who does not want a layout in their home. In addition, the cost of models, while very high quality is out of control. Who has $200+ to drop on a single locomotive?? Whatever happened to the cheap-o Athearn Blue Box stuff and the the even cheaper train sets that Life Like and Bachmann used to sell to get kids hooked on model trains? What about the kits for the more advanced modeler, like the ones from Tichy that took forever to build, but you had a sense of accomplishment, not to mention a super detailed model when you were done? Not everyone wants to spend mega bucks on ready to run.

I cant wait for my next medical appointment. I really need to find out why I am always so hot and always sweating. I know my mother keeps the house hot, but there is something more to it. I shouldn't be sweating like this. Meanwhile, I have been running the air conditioner since I cant open the windows. I try to turn the heat down, but mother always cranks the heat back up. Talk about polar opposites, she's always cold and I'm always hot.

My Awakening.....

I am currently in the process of awakening. I have been a night owl for some time but lately it seems like I just can't get the energy up to get out of bed without some sort of motivating factor.



I think I am a hybrid sanguinarian/psychic/empathic vampire.



i have been through a number of the awakening warning signs. I have been dealing with stress and a lot of painful moments most of my life but it has gotten far worse as my mother has declined due to her dementia. The most painful being two summers ago when my aunt tried to have my mother institutionalized and this past year when I caught my mothers home health aide and her husband stealing from me. I have been battling depression since the spring. Its one of the reasons I took so many road trips during the late spring/early summer. I just couldn't spend time at home or if I was home, I would be caccooned in my bedroom in bed sleeping. This spring and summer I had an empty feeling that just wouldn't go away. I still feel that way. As for a strong sense of what people around me are feeling? I definitely get this feeling about what people think about ME in particular. I have always thought that it was just me being overly sensitive and just suffering from poor self esteem. Maybe I am more in tune to that than what I have previously believed.



I have been sensitive to the sun for some time. I have always burned easily but it seems to have gotten worse over the years. This summer I could feel my skin burning even on bright cloudy days and in November, I was sitting in my car and the low angle bright sun gave me a burning sensation on my skin even though I got no actual sunburn. That said, I always try to find a shady spot or at least position my car so the sun isn't directly on me.



My eyes have always been sensitive the sun as well. I tend to wear sunglasses even on cloudy days. Lately I have been prescribed contacts and they seem to help with that a little as I think they do have a slight tint.



I have always preferred my red meat on the rare side. I like my steaks to be juicy. There is nothing worse than a dry, overdone steak, YUCK!! Perhaps this is one of the ways I have been "feeding"? I have also been diagnosed with low iron in my blood to the point of taking iron supplements. They did tests and do not know why i have iron poor blood. Perhaps its because I am not getting enough blood from my diet?



I have always been shy and a quiet person. I tend to observe the other people when I am a crowd but by myself. Maybe this is a form of feeding? I have always been kind of cranky at times so theres nothing new there. Lately I have been trying to feed off the energy from the crowd when I am out dining by concentrating, trying to imagine the energy in the room not sure if I had success. Sometimes I get this tingling feeling starting from the top of my head that kind of spreads down my back. There have been times when this feeling is stronger than others. Lately it seems like instead of that tingling feeling the top of my head, its like a cold chill that spreads from my head, down my spine and down my arms. Of course I am easily distracted so its hard to know if I am successfully feeding or not or if I am getting enough energy this way. I hope eventually I will get to the bottom of who and what I am and if I need to feed, to learn how to do it properly and responsibly. I don't want to be offensive or offend anyone and sure as heck don't want to hurt anyone or anything either.

Disadvantages of having a MAC

Gotta love technology. There are so many things you can do today. I have used Apple computers pretty much since the beginning. I like the fact that MAC's aren't affected by viruses, trojan horses and worms as much as Windows based computers. I like that Apple products, at least the ones I have owned seem to be well built and I have never really had many problems with hardware. The only blot on Apple's record is the built in modem that was in my G3 tower. Had two of those go bad on me. That was resolved by installing a US Robotics external modem. That said, the major drawback to MAC's is SOFTWARE!! I cannot tell you how many times I have seen a program I wanted and found that it is windows only. Most recently, I got a new Lifescan meter. I can be hooked up via USB to a computer, the problem? The upload software is windows only. I have tried an alternative program to no avail. Will have to try contacting the company in the morning to see what gives. I tried deleting the program and re-installing several times but I just cant get it to work. :-P

I am a gamer so I have always used a PC. Mac's have a too lightweight platform for me.
