Re-reading my last journal entry, I just realized that no matter how proud I say I was of my students, I was just bragging about myself again. The most frequent word in the entry is "I".
During my junior and senior years at the U of I, I taught self-defense classes to coeds. It was university sponsored and it went a long way to paying for my classes.
Black Belt magazine ran a series on women who had received formal martial arts training for years, but still froze up when in a real-life, street attach situation. My students overcame that. We didn't drill in the standard kickboxing or self-defense for women techniques. I taught them the basics, how to strike, where to strike, how to break holds...that kind of thing. Then I put them in real-life situations and attack situations, dragging them to the ground, behind bleachers, etc. I showed them I am a man, I'm 4 times as strong as them, and I will not give in to an elbow to the ribs or an instep stomp. I taught them how to fight for their lives.
For "final exams" I took a gymnasium and filled it with obstacles (bleachers, trash cans, chalkboards, basketball racks...whatever I could find), and then I turned off the lights. The girls were let into the gym one at a time, 2 minutes apart. The only light was the emergency exit sign at the other end. I was somewhere in the middle, waiting for them.
I'm proud to say that every girl successfully fought me off. I will also admit that two different girls broke my nose in consecutive semesters.
I was damn proud of those girls.

What's wrong with that? You also have to remember if more people took pride, and ownership of their actions we would have a far more functioning society.
This idea of martyrdom for another is silly, because without purpose it is selfish and utimetly so someone can be victim. True martyrs don't ask for acknowledgement, they conciously choose their path for themselves because they feel so strongly that it is right, even if the cause is for others.

I agree wholeheartedly with Saharia, Capt.
Besides, you ARE awesome and very humble.Always complimenting others with kind words of encouragement.
Whats so darn wrong with acknowledging your own accomplishment? You got stuents to LISTEN and you got them to do well.
