I'm currently shaking and nauseous from my workout. I over did it because I'm stubborn. Or stupid.
I was beating on the heavy bag, and I listen to music while I workout. For my bag workouts I go all-out for a whole song from my mp3 player, then shadow box for the next song, then all out on the heavy bag again, until I have kicked the snot out of the heavy bag for 6 songs.
The first song was something unremarkable by Disturbed , about 3-1/2 minutes or so. I felt good and finished the round with a flourish. The next song for my shadowboxing (rest) was also about 3-1/2 minutes. The next song (it was on random) was inagodadavida by Iron Butterfly (17 minutes). I went all out until the end. My rest song was by KISS, so about 2-1/2 minutes tops. Then came Guns-n-Roses live version of Paradise City. 9 minutes flat. I looked like Paul Newman at the end of the boxing scene in Cool Hand Luke. I couldn't lift my hands.
I was ready to crawl off into the corner and cough up a lung.
The sensors on my truck have become very Zen-like lately.
Life is a journey.
Time is a river.
The door is a jar.

Trying to start a good habit, I went for another hike at the Dallas Nature Center again this morning. I overslept again, so when I arrived at the Center parking lot I was expecting 30-50 vehicles. No so. Surprisingly there were only about a dozen cars and SUVs. A relatively light showing for after 8 AM on a clear and warm Sunday.
I was about to brave the 2.5 mile difficult trail again when I saw they were putting up Trail Closed notices on my chosen route. Apparently earlier in the day someone disturbed a large bee hive and they were swarming a portion of that trail. Suddenly I'm very glad I arrived as late as I did.
My second choice was a 1.7 mile Moderate-to-Difficult trail, which started a half-mile up a second trail, for a total round trip of 2.7 miles. I set off at what I hoped was a pace I could maintain for however long it took to finish.
I'm happy to say that I kept the pace fairly consistently. Lots of short, steep climbs, but nothing compared to the Dificult trail of 2 weeks ago. I'm even happier to report that I PASSED a couple on the trail going the same direction, and they were both younger and appeared fitter than me. (And NO, TittySprinkles, before you even ask, her wheelchair did not seem to hold her back that much).
I finished only slightly winded in 37 minutes. This may become my favorite trail until I'm in shape enough to tackle the Difficult trail on a regular basis.

It has been way too long since I've been camping; I found moss growing on the north side of my compass.
Why do I enjoy "roughing it"? There's no air conditioning or heating. No running water. No electricity. No house. No indoor toilet. Sleeping on the ground. Eating outdoors.

I chose this morning to go on another hike at the Dallas Nature Center. I showed up late and there were at least 30 vehicles in the parking lot. The temperature had already started to rise, so I decided on a shorter and easier route than I chose last week. I took my bottle of water, checked my watch, and headed off down a 1-1/2 mile trail with a Moderate difficulty rating. Most of the trail was a bed of wood chips, instead of dirt, rock and roots like last week's.
I was moving at a pretty good pace, headed down into the shallow valley and then up the other side. I just topped the ridge when I met a group of 8 women of varying ages and sizes, ranging from half my size to easily twice my size, all smiling and running. As they passed me each and every one said "Good morning" in cheery and sincere voices. I tried to answer them back and discovered I didn't have the lung capacity to get one audible response out. I need to buy a t-shirt that just says "fuck you" on it so I can point to my response when I can't talk.
This path was much easier than last week's, although I did notice that about 300 yards of the trail was lined with cactus on both sides, so a misstep is inadvisable.
Twenty-three minutes after I started I came around a bend in the trail and I was back at the Visitor's Center. Last week it took me 80 minutes to do 2-1/2 miles on the Difficult trail. Today it took less than a third of that time to do 1-1/2 miles of a Moderate trail. I felt energized and disappointed at the same time. It took longer for me to get dressed this morning than it did to hike my chosen trail. I was sweating, but that was from the heat, not the effort.
I looked around and decided I didn't want to start a second trail this morning, so I headed home to shower. They only have one Difficult trail, so I guess I'm going to have to get used to the same scenery all the time.

I had decided that I've spent too much time on my butt, so I went for a walk at the Dallas Nature Center Sunday morning. I hadn't been in several years and a lot of things have changed. They used to maintain 3 poorly marked trails; a 1 mile, a 2-1/2 mile, and a 4 mile trail. The trails used to switch back and forth and cross each other repeatedly. I'd usually get lost and wind up doing at least 7 miles before finding my way back out again (What? I'm back at the lake again? Dammit!)
Now the Conservation Center maintains no less than 7 distinctly marked trails ranging from a half mile to two and a half miles, and in varying degrees of difficulty. Most of the trails no longer cross each other, leaving little chance of taking a wrong turn anymore.
I hit the entrance of the 2-1/2 mile trail at 7:10 AM, with the sun just coming up over the ridge, just in time to catch a few of the earlier risers leaving. They all looked like Olympians, wearing light running attire, nary a drop of sweat among them. It was 76 degrees, with a relative humidity of about 90%; I was in cargo shorts, a cotton-blend shirt and hiking boots and I had worked up a sweat walking the 50 yards from the parking lot. They emerged from the woods on a run, checking their pulses against their watches, one of them announcing to no one in particular that they completed the path in 23 minutes.
That was the Difficult path. Two and a half miles of it. The average hiker does a Difficult path at an average speed of a mile in 40 minutes. They ran the whole thing in 23 total. My first thought was that the Conservation Center must have blazed some pretty tame trails.
I was sure that I wasn't going to be the first one on the path that morning. Probably not in the first couple dozen. You never want to be first one on a path in the morning.
The first person finds all the creatures from overnight, like the spider webs build across the path in the evening, and the snakes still sleeping on warm rocks. These were all long gone before I approached the trail, so I strode off in confidence, theme music from Raiders of the Lost Ark rolling through my head.
Once among the trees the slight breeze dropped to nothing and the humidity rose to nearly 100%.
The air was very thick as I hit the first hill almost immediately.
In some places the ground rose much steeper that a flight of stairs. If it wasn't for the tree roots providing natural steps, I would have been on my hands and knees here.
In other places the tree roots were a potential ankle-breaking nuisance.
Part of the 4-mile trail, no longer maintained. Somewhere back there used to be my favorite spot to pause and look around.
In the middle of a group of cedar trees is a set of concrete steps that used to go up the porch of a long-gone residence. There is no other evidence of a house being there; no foundation, no remnants, just the porch steps. The 50+ year old cedar trees grow right where the house should have been.
Some intrepid fools actually use this felled tree to cross this dry creek bed. I used the bridge another 50 yards up the trail to the left.
Hmmmmmm...do I take the left path, or the right?
I came to an area of about half an acre of dead cedars.
I have no idea what killed this stand of trees.
Somehow I did take a wrong turn (I didn't think that was possible).
The trail ended at a barbed-wire and log fence.
Path.
Path.
Um...path?
I know I'm at least three-quarters of the way through...how is it uphill both ways?
I completed the the 2-1/2 mile trail in just under 80 minutes, including stopping halfway through and eating breakfast: a banana-nut scone and half a bottle of water.
I'd like to be dedicated enough to do this at least once a week.

I love nature walks! Nothing beats the fresh air and beautiful scenery! I would love to get lost in there ....well not for long (i don't think i would enjoy the creatures of the night) but a few hours of walking through there looks like fun!
