I have just left a project at an assisted-living facility in Arlington, Texas. There's somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,400 residents, nearly all elderly. I thought it was a fairly nice facility; about as nice as an average 3-star hotel. Regardless of the accommodations, there seem to be many residents who are considered a flight risk; some have Alzheimers, some have been put there by their families (Damn kids put me in here and they're spending all my money!). Doesn't matter the reason, some of them just don't want to be there.
I finished my inspection in the unit being renovated and was returning the key to the front desk when the fire alarms went off. Lights flashing, klaxons blaring. I didn't smell smoke so I thought it was a drill or an accident. The staff come pouring out of the offices, the dining room and the kitchen and they all hit the doors running. I asked the receptionist if it was a paper building and were were about to be incinerated. She stopped putting on her sneakers long enough to tell me that the flight-risk residents wear ankle bracelets that trip sensors at the exit doors, locking them, preventing them from leaving. But they organize and congregate at the side and back exits and one of them pulls the fire alarm, automatically unlocking the exit doors, and they scatter like cats. Then she rushed past me and out the door herself.
I picked up my equipment and walked to my truck. When I was leaving and had a view of the side and back of 2 of the buildings, sure enough, there were several elderly residents trying to make a getaway. With walkers. Each had at least 2 staff members gently guiding them in big arcs, herding them back towards the main building.

It was almost sad, watching how easily they were caught, but I certainly hope I have that much spirit when someone decides to commit me. Never give up; never lose hope; never stop trying.
