It got up to 42F here today - sun remained all day and the Powderkeg festival was rocking. The wait for the tubing run was over an hour and the kids don't have the patience for that.

So we solved the worlds largest ice maze, took in some sights and headed back home for some continued outdoor fun without 2,000 of our newest friends around us.

A good time nonetheless. Buffalo needs to do more of this stuff, on a more regular basis.

It should be a non-stop party.

Most of the country already thinks it's winter here 365 days a year. We should make the most of it.

Crazy time of year...

...it must be an early March or something. Aside from St. Patty's day and the drunken jocularity that surrounds it, I've never liked the month of March... the weather is wacko and nothing is on TV, sports wise, but college basketball.

But days like today are typical and much the reason for not liking it.

It is too warm to snow... yet, it does. All day. Wet, heavy snow. It's like rain that piles up.

Bizarre.

But... Morri and I are going to make the best of the warm temps and go have fun in the snow. Maybe build a fort in the front yard and throw snow balls at cars.

Or maybe just at each other.

Tomorrow is the Powderkeg Festival. I want to take the kids on the sledding run.

That is my goal tomorrow.

Morri made breakfast for me before I had to leave for Albany this morning. A nice big'ol breakfast burrito full of sausage, eggs, onions, peppers, mushrooms and pepper-jack, in a spinich-pesto tortilla.

She knew I'd hit the road without eating if she didn't.

I could go on and on about how sweet and kind she is but then people would stop being afraid of her around here.

She does have that mystique to keep... :)

They still rock. Their age is merely more evidence that they were a pioneer of their genre. Look at some of their production over the years, the messages in their songs.

And they PERFORMED.

Not like the wannabes the half-time show usually books that lip-synchs to a pre-recorded studio track because they're afraid to have their real singing voice heard...

...I bet you do.

See, and that's the thing; every area shows the ways the Earth likes to recycle... whether it be earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados or blizzards good'ol mother nature just like to recycle.

My deal is though... that was about as bad as it can get. We've had other storms - a freak autumn snow fall in mid-October '06 that crippled the area with detroyed trees and power outages... 72-inches in 72 hours in December '01.

But generally, a blizzard... you see it coming. And if you're smart, they're not that tough to survive. No evacuation necessary, just camp out in the house for a few days with some beer, or wine, or... whatever.. preferrably with someone you can snuggle and get warm with.

Come to think of it.. blizzards can actually be kind of fun. Heh.

So when people give me shit about how much it snows in Buffalo (which on average is less or about as much as than other metro areas in the Northeast) I think.. yeah.. we have seasons. It snows here. Big whoop. On average, I think our weather is pretty darn nice. :)

Now if we could just kill all the politicians in New York, we'd be getting somewhere...

The Blizzard of '77

16:29 Feb 05 2010
Times Read: 1,443

I have in the past shared pieces of myself through my poetry and the images I’ve captured through photography. This is a part of my life that stands out in my memory.

They are someone else’s images but my memories of this event are pretty vivid for it happening when I was 5 years old.

I think the introductory slides and the slide show that follows explains it all well enough. And I’ve told this story to Morri… much like my father, I feel like I’m getting in the habit of telling her the same stories over and over. Heh.

I remember the day clearly. As the slides indicate, it was a beautiful morning for January. My brother and I went outside with our Grandfather as we often did to “help” him working in the barn, but our attention as usual turned to playing in the snow. Building a fort, digging tunnels… whatever game we decided to play.

We sensed the weather starting to change, but like most kids of that age, we were too preoccupied with what we were doing to think much of it. What I remember most is how quickly the day went from pleasant to frightening. The snow started to fall… within seconds, literally seconds, to storm front was upon us and the barn, a mere 40 feet away was no longer visible, at all. My brother, only feet away from me, was a dark blur through sheets of white blowing viciously at us. We had a sense of which direction the barn was but I think we were both too shocked by how quickly the weather changed and how blinded we were in the white-out.

My brother and I got close enough to see each other but stood in still silence. Very soon, a dark hand emerged from the white that surrounded us – my Grandfather found us and led us back to the barn. We waited there for a while until the first wave of the storm front passed and visibility improved slightly; at least enough to see some features – cars, trees, shrubs that were more than 20 feet away. It was enough to be able to follow a path and trudge through the deepening snow to the house that was made invisible by the storm.

The days that followed were difficult – no power, limited heat, limited phone service and being virtually trapped in the house by towering drifts of snow. As you can see by the photos in the slide-show, cars, busses and even houses were completely buried by the storm.

Although I was young, it was a time I will never forget.

Telling stories over and over has a charm, that's how we know what makes a person- the things that stand out in their memories and and pop up more than anything else.

My son was 5 here during Hurricane Katrina. I supposed he'll recall it much like you do with this memory. He also played and acted his age during a very scary time- even though he still remembers it was a dark period. At 5 he told e that all I had to do was believe that everything would be fine, and it would be.

By the way, love the Abba ;) And I had no idea there was an Orleans county in NY.
