Prologue
Run! Run! That was the only thought going through her mind. She had to get away from him; had to hide. If he found her she’d be dead. She could hear his pounding footsteps behind her, slowly coming closer. She was tiring, couldn’t breathe, and to breathe…must rest. No! Need to get away. Her urge to survive was stronger then her desire to give up. She needed to live; her whole life was ahead of her. She could sense the man was getting closer as she turned down an alley in hopes of finding a place to hide. She should hide. Where is there to hide? The dumpster! He won’t find her. He can’t find her.
She tries to control her breathing. Tries to slow it down. She is gasping for breath, he will hear her. He will find her. She hears his approaching footsteps, slow and diligent, yet, careful. He is approaching her hiding place and she has the urge to scream out. She can’t, she will give herself away. Has to stay silent, must stay silent. He is so close to her now that she can hear his labored breathing from running. What will she do if he spots her? She must get away, must survive. Someone help her! He is practically on top of her. He stops breathing to listen. She stops too. All is silent. Out of the shadows she sees him smile. He turns to her hiding place. He looks right at her but he cannot see her. It is all in darkness. She is so scared that she is now quivering. That grin. She will remember it always if she lives. She is staring at him. All of a sudden he starts to whisper to her, her name.
“I’m going to find you. There is no use hiding. If you get away I will find you again. Come to me Sadie. Come out and play.”
He started laughing. The sound is so horrible to her ears, so evil.
“Sadie………Sadie…”
Chapter 1
“Sadie…Sadie…”
John Levy always knew his fiancé to be a heavy sleeper so he knew it would take awhile for her to wake.
“Sadie…Sadie…” He started to shake her gently.
All of a sudden she woke up and practically flew out of bed. John yelled out she startled him so much.
“Oh my God. It was just a dream.” Sadie whispered to herself.
She looked over at John. He was standing against the wall with a hand holding his heart. He had a disturbed look on his face that changed rapidly to different emotions. His face was slightly pale from fright and it quickly started turning crimson with anger.
“What is wrong with you?” she asked.
“You just scared the hell out of me. What is wrong with you?”
“Oh John, it was horrible. I just had the worst nightmare.”
Knowing that Sadie already had an overactive imagination, John braced himself for her story.
“I was being chased by a man. I was out of breath, couldn’t breathe. I needed to rest but knew if I stopped he would catch me. I ran down an alley and hid behind a dumpster. He followed me down and was looking for me. He called out my name as if he knew who I was. He told me to come out and play and that if I managed to escape he would find me again.”
She started to cry. Sadie had the habit of being extremely emotional at times and John knew this. He wrapped her in his arms in a tight embrace until she calmed down enough to talk again. She had always been comfortable in his arms. Always feeling safe in them, so it only took her a few moments. When she had enough courage she told him every detail she could remember.
“God, it seemed so real. It’s as if I was being hunted by a supernatural being. He always knew where I was going or what I was going to do.”
“Supernatural?” John questioned.
“It’s not funny. Laugh if you like but it scared the hell out of me.”
“No one is laughing. I just think it is a little far fetched.”
“You didn’t see him, the look in his eyes, hear the evil in his voice. He was pure evil and he was only after me.”
“It was just a dream. All will pass over time but time is not on our side. We are late for the meeting at the station.”
Sadie looked at the clock and sure enough her little escapade already made them 10 minutes late. Both of them worked at the Starsunville Police Department in Arizona. The taskforce wasn’t large since the town was small. It was only ten thousand or so. Though, none-the-less, the cops were still needed from time to time.
John had strange hours since he worked vice and she didn’t, but he always tried his hardest to keep semi normal hours since, as it was, they already had very little time to spend together.
Every morning on their way to work they always stopped at Don’s, the nearby coffee shop. It was like a ritual whether they were running late or not.
John drove up to a parking space and went in while Sadie stayed in the car. He had always liked coming here ever since he was little. The fresh smells brought many good memories. He also knew almost everyone that stopped in and or worked here. Being a cop in a small town you have a tendency to get to know the people you meet. John walked up to the counter and rang the bell for service.
“Hey John. You want the usual today?” Don asked. John had known Don since they were both children. They were practically inseparable as kids but they had slowly drifted apart over the years.
“Yes please, for Sadie too. She’s out waiting in the car.”
“Ok, one Double Shot Espresso and one French Vanilla Cappuccino coming up. How is Sadie anyway? I don’t get to see her much. Have you two set a date yet?” He asked
“We were thinking about next April.”
“Wow that’s only a few moths away.”
“Seven. We’ve already been engaged for a year. We both think it’s about time to move things up a level.”
“True. I do wish you two the best of luck and I am looking forward to being there.”
“Thank you. We won’t be sending out invitations until about January. That way it gives people enough time to plan.”
“Great, here’s your drinks. It will be $4.15.” John pulled out a $5 and gave it to Don. He never liked getting change back so he always let him keep it.
“Thanks. Have a nice day and say hi to Sadie for me.”
“Will do, thanks.”
John walked out and went back to the car. He felt odd for some reason. Almost as if Don had known something that he didn’t. He shrugged it off and didn’t think twice about it.
“That took awhile. Don in one of his talkative moods again?” Sadie asked.
“Of course, he always is. He’s the only one that I know that is that perky this early in the morning. I don’t even want to know how much coffee he drinks in a day. He says hi though.”
“Oh, that’s nice. Are you ready to go? If we stay here any longer we will end up being minced meat instead of in deep shit.”
On the way to the station Sadie only had one thing on her mind, her dream. She just couldn’t get over it. Something about it just seemed…wrong. She felt like she had seen the man before and that the whole experience was in some way real. John didn’t think so. He just thought she was over reacting but she knew that there was something else, something deeper.
Neither one of them knew what this meeting was about. As of yesterday there wasn’t one even scheduled. Sergeant Peers had called everyone last night to tell them that something important had surfaced and that it was mandatory for everyone to be there.
As everyone filled into the North Conference Room they could see the dire look on Peers face. It looked as if he didn’t get any sleep, which, as they will soon find out, he didn’t for one reason.
“Thank you all for taking the time out of your busy lives to meet here. We have some very important business to discuss. There has been a breakout of the state prison, Cliffton, last night and being within a 50 mile radius of the prison Starsunville County is now on red alert as well as several other counties. As you all should know, five years ago, the mass murderer, whom we dubbed, the Midnight Slayer, was put away for life with no parole for the murder of six women. It will be publicly announced tonight on the local 6:00 news. He has not been spotted, as of yet, but we are glad to say that he has not started his old habits. We need to be sure that all women are aware of this man. He was known to strike all females between the ages of 19-25. We need to be aware of all happenings in the town since the FBI believe he is still in Arizona and most likely will not leave since this is his birthplace. Although, just in case he did decide to leave it will also be announced nationally so that everyone can be on the lookout. This is not a person that you want roaming the streets.”
“What do you propose we should do?” Adam Dureemith asked, another cop on vice.
“Just keep your eyes and ears open for the moment. Other than that there really is nothing else we can do. His general description: he is 6’2”, fairly strong build, dark sandy hair, and dark brown almost black eyes. His only identifying marks are a scar on his left eyebrow, which is nearly invisible from far away, and he has a black knight riding a dragon tattooed onto his chest. Which I hope no one will ever get close enough to see them unless making an arrest. Again, I warn you he is still at large and women, please be careful. You never know when or where he could turn up.”
“I need two people to speak to the press tonight. We have no information other than what I just told you. It should be easy enough. John and Sadie, do you feel up to it?”
“Sure Sergeant, we can handle it.” Said John.
“Yes sir.” Sadie replied.
“Good it’s settled then. You both will need to be back here at 5:00. There will be a news reporter, Stacie Roth, here to meet you and to ask you some questions to get you ready for the air.”
Sadie looked ever at John and without even looking he knew what she was thinking. She was very uneasy because this meeting hit too close to home with her dream. So close that it was making her paranoid. Was her dream an omen? Should she heed the warnings? She was so scared that it was almost hard to hide it. She swore to herself she would never sleep again for the fear that the man of her dreams might return.
Chapter 2
For five years he had never gotten the taste of death out of his mouth. All of those sweet, young girls, whose flesh made his tongue tingle in delight. His fingers were itching again to feel a woman’s soft skin underneath his fingertips. No he must wait. He has to let them figure out his ingenious escape. How he outwitted the guards and trapped them one-by-one, just like little sheep to have their wool shorn.
They are lucky that he didn’t let everyone loose. No, he couldn’t do that. Then he wouldn’t be the center of everyone’s attention. He wanted all the glory, the love, and the hatred. He wanted to be in the eyes of the nation. There must be something about him on tonight for sure. He looked at the clock, 5:45. It is almost time.
At 6:00 he walked to his TV. It was old (one of the ones where you have to walk up and turn a dial to change the channel) and only got three channels but it was good enough for his purpose. When he switched it on he was just in time to hear the late breaking story:
“‘Hello, I am Dana Stoom. Now for our late breaking story: We have had word that there was a breakout at the Arizona State Prison, Cliffton, last night, where several life bound inmates were being held. We have Stacie Roth, live at the Starsunville Police Department for the details.’
‘Thank you Dana. I am here with vice John Levy and regular taskforce Sadie Starret, whom will hopefully be able to tell us about the situation. John, who was it that broke out of the prison?’
‘He is Kevin Raddalow. He often goes by Kevvy. He was a mass murderer who we put away 5 years ago. During the time of the murders some people referred to him as the Midnight Slayer because he always managed to strike at midnight.’
‘What can we expect of the police as of right now?’
‘Police only k now the basics as of this moment. We were just informed recently but we can assure you that we are keeping our eyes and ears open for any possible leads. We do believe that he is residing somewhere in Arizona but we cannot be for certain. As of right now he hasn’t breathed into the wind but when he does we will be right there to put him back where he belongs. For good. ’
‘Sadie, can you tell us what this man looks like?’
“He is approximately 6 feet 2 inches tall with a strong frame. He has sandy hair with piercing dark eyes. The only identifying marks are a scar on his left brow and a tattoo on his chest of a black knight riding a dragon.’
Kevin stared at the screen. He saw the sweetest looking girl. Kevvy knew who and what he wanted and now it was just the matter of getting it. He turned his attention back to the story just as his picture was broadcast to the nation.
‘Sadie, what can you tell the viewers to hopefully ease their minds?’
‘Only that we are going to do our best to get this buy back where he belongs. Ladies we humble ask you to stay on the alert. Raddalow was known to strike 19-25 year old females and we don’t know if he is planning to strike again.’
‘There you have it ladies and gentlemen. This is Stacie Roth, reporting live from Starsunville Police Department, Arizona.’
‘Thank you Stacie.’ Said Dana. ‘Now for a lighter touch in the town…’”
He turned off the T.V and looked at the reflection of his cunning grin in the dark screen. He was planning but he knew that they did not know this yet. No one can stay away from his or her one true passion forever. After all he just found his perfect prize. Now he just had to figure out how to win it.
Chapter 3
Every person has their own way of getting what they want. It all may be logical but there are always the sick people in the world that go from day to day thinking about the things that they could do to get a rise out of others. What dog to kick, who to murder, who to rape. Kevin was one of these people. Scientist’s say that an abusive adult can be a result from an abusive childhood, but in Kevin’s case it’s not true.
Throughout all of his years in school he always did well. He got good grades, was top in his class and worked steady jobs from the time he was 13. When he was convicted of the murders his parents didn’t know what to think. What could they think? They had raised him to be the best, they tried their best and the conviction of their only son was their reward.
Sitting in his room, Kevin could only smile. He knew that they had no idea where he is. They don’t know how he got out. How he trapped all those poor helpless little sheep. It was a shame that he couldn’t do more. He wants nothing to do with the men; it’s the women he is concerned about, one woman in particular.
“Finite! It is time.” Kevin purred.
He got up from his chair and wandered over to the window where he was able to catch the last glimpses of the sunset. His plan was set in his mind. Now he just had to put it into motion.
***************************************
Back at the station, Sadie was still very uneasy. The interview went well and it took them only 20 minutes to get rid of Miss Roth. She knew that deep down something was somehow connected to her but didn’t know how. She didn’t know what was going on and deep down she didn’t want to know. Everyone was in a bustle and she wanted nothing more than to just go home and rest.
“Coffee for Miss Sadie?” John said as he came up behind her at her desk. “You look beat.”
“Thanks Hun, I am. I just want to go home. I’m tired of the entire bustle.”
“I have some paper work to finish up but if you want to go now I can get a ride from Adam.”
“That’s ok, I’ll wait. I really don’t want to be alone right now.”
“Still freaked out huh?”
“Yeah, I don’t know why either. I’m probably just over-reacting again.”
“You? Over-reacting? Never!”
“Ha ha! Very funny! Don’t mock me.”
“I’m sorry. That paper work isn’t going to get done with me just sitting here. I should be done in about an hour. Go take a nap somewhere. I’ll come find you when I’m done.”
“Ok Hun.” She raised her head to receive his kiss and went back to day dreaming. She knew that there was something more. She was bound and determined to figure it out too. A letter carrier came into the office holding all of the cubicles to deliver the mail. Sadie could hear him yelling out names above the dim roar of the office.
“April……..Brad…..Adam……John…last but not least…..Sadie…”
“That’s me. I never get mail what could this be.”
As she opened the letter she noticed a slight smell of some perfume or cologne. She didn’t know who sent it. There was no return address and the handwriting was very neat and precise, almost as if whoever sent it wanted to disguise his or her handwriting. From the looks of it, though, she would figure it to me male. When she caught sight of the contents she became very disturbed. Getting a letter normally wouldn’t bother her but for the fact that it was printed in some text that wasn’t readable it did.
Ring around the Rosie,
Pockets full of Posie,
Ashes ashes,
They all go BOOM!
On a hunch she dropped the letter onto her desk and called for John. She told him that she got this letter in the mail and thought that they could have a riddler on their hands. John inspected the letter and thought about it for a few minutes.
“You smell that?” he asked.
“Yeah, I do. It smells like cologne. It reminds me of a scent I was looking at. Umm….what was it called? Samourai by Alain Delon.”
“How on earth do you know that?”
“I was looking at them for Christmas. Then I saw the price and almost choked.”
“For who?”
“That doesn’t matter. What matters is that we know whoever sent this has expensive taste. It runs $65 a bottle.”
“Hmm…I still don’t understand why to you though? Out of all the police in this station, female at that, it was specifically addressed to you.” said John.
“I don’t know either. Do you know what font it is?” Sadie replied.
“It has to be webdings. It’s the only font that I know of that has symbols like that. The only thing is that there are several different types. We will give it to Blacose and see what he comes up with. As of right now though, let’s go home. It’s already 8:00 and we have had enough excitement for one day.”
The rest of this story as yet to be written....if you have any suggestion on future events please e-mail me with your ideas! I can be reached at tksloon@yahoo.com. ~Alexis
